When to send invites for DW?

Sorry, I know this must have been asked many times, but my search doesn't seem to be working.

When did you send your invites for your destination wedding? I know regular wedding invites go out 6-8 weeks before the day, but that doesn't seem like enough time for our guests to make a final decision and still get good flights/rooms. We have to book our flights way in advance to get a decent flight/price, but maybe that's just because we're in AK.

Thoughts?

I sent my invitations out 4 months prior. I sent out STD's 11 months prior.
  • I am sending mine out about 2 1/2 months prior. When i sent out our STDs i put info in there for the guests to book early if they wanted to, and that is when most of them did. Once the actual invites go out, I don't think many more people will book, but we will see!

  • We sent out Save the Dates out a year in advance so people could make plans accordingly. Then we sent out our invitations to the wedding 4 months out and then the At Home Reception we are sending out the traditional 6-8 weeks. Hope this helps.

  • It really depends on your location, etc.

For instance, we're cruising, so we had to get our invites out in enough time for our guests to receive them and decide if they would be able to get the time off and/or save up for the expense of booking their cabins BEFORE the cut off date for our guests to be able to take advantage of the group rate.

So, we sent our STD's out 10 months out and our MIB invites 6 months ahead. :)
I know some who aren't having a ton of people attend have the option of waiting until just a month before.  Some have resorts which require a head count 6 months ahead of time, so it really depends.

Having sent out our STD's sure gave us a little heads up as to how many were actually going to commit to going though!

    Hope this helps!
  • We mailed out our STD's 14 months prior to our wedding date. We're mailing out our formal invites 6 months prior.
We're going on a 7 day cruise as a part of our wedding so we want to make sure we're giving our guests enough time to decide, save money, and ask for vacation time.
It's really up to your destination, and your guests.  Do you think they'll need more time, or can they pretty much set their plans in place with less time.

  • sent out STDs 11 months prior and invites 2 1/2 months prior. The STDs gave people the info they needed to book so the invites were really just a formality

  • Since my wedding will be small and intimate; we're planning to get STD's a year in advance so our family can save for it and then the few invites for the ceremony afew months in advance. For our AHR, I'll probably send those a month prior, right before we head to HI. This of course is next year for me , so I have plenty of time ;)
