Where did you all find your cake inspiration/pic?

I have a baker in mind I want to use to make my cake, but I'm struggling to find a design to send him! Especially since most of the classic beautiful cakes I see in Southern Living etc. are all fondant and we want to use mostly buttercream, just fondtant accents. Did anyone have a particular site or way they found their cake? :) Thanks all!!

Re: Where did you all find your cake inspiration/pic?

  • I googled "buttercream wedding cakes" for some initial ideas, but I ended up finding one that I liked in the person's book of work. They can always adjust details and such to make it more to your liking.
  • I was having the same problem.  I didn't like anything I saw, but I was on pinterest one day and came across one I fell in love with.  I would try pinterst too for different ideas, i love the site.

  • Thanks, I should prob check out Pinterest - i'm afraid i'll get obsesssed w/it and never get anything else done haha. I find different elements I like in cakes but not one that is "IT". And I worry that I need to keep the cost down, so can't have a ton in fondant.
    Thanks for the advice :)

  • Would the baker himself have design options? Maybe you could get inspired by a picture from their work. If not - what about adding larger cake decorators in the area? A Spoon Full of Sugar, Maribelle Cakery, etc. etc. I'm sure flipping through other photo albums you could get an idea and ask the baker if he was capable of making that cake.

Pinterest is dangerous but I love it! Workouts, recipes and wedding decor I am hooked!!!
  • Most cakes that you see with fondant can be completed with buttercream frosting from a good cake decorator. Looking at our cake, most people thought it had fondant and they were surprised when we told them nope buttercream.
  • I'm thinking a buttercream base would work with fondant accents - i'm guessing it won't weigh down the buttercream/pull it off, but a good baker should know that.
They don't have many designs for me to look at, which is why I'm trying to find some more online. Maybe I have an idea it'll be like they say the dress should be - where you see it and think "thats it!" and it's not haha.
