Cake Drama

The Twentieth Century Club's provides your cake, so this whole time we've been confident that we'd like it... last weekend, I picked up two sample cakes from them, one was chocolate with strawberry butter cream and the other was a spice cake with butter pecan butter cream... and... they were not good. Not horrific, but definitely not good. :( The outside icing tasted just like crisco, and for the chocolate one the strawberry tasted like alcohol, I don't know if they put a liquor in there, but bah, the spice cake was definitely better, but not that good. :(

So, now I have some cake drama. I called Oakmont Bakery and they can do the cake and their prices are so reasonable. We had their cupcakes for our shower, and it was so delicious, so that is one option.

My Uncle's friend is who my Mom wants (he's cakes are delicious), but he hasn't called me back, and I feel like I shouldn't chase after him, so I don't know.

My Uncle also suggested Paddy Cake in Bloomfield. I know nothing about them. Does anyone have any experience with them?

I guess, what would you do in this situation?

I would determine what the venue is going to charge in the way of cake cutting fees for not using their vendor and take that in to account.

Knowing that you have tasted Oakmont and most people love them, it would be a safe bet.  Would you be able to do a cake tasting with them or do it blind from DC?

Agree with cch on calculating the cost based on what TCC charges you as a cake cutting fee for outside cakes...

But I'd go with Oakmont at this point.  You like their cakes, they are reliable, and you can afford the price.  It's not worth hunting down people that aren't responsive - the last thing you need is an unresponsive vendor to add stress at this point!

I do know the cake cutting fee, $1.25/slice... which is ridiculous, but we decided when we booked the venue that if we didn't like their cake we'd just go ahead and pay the fee.

    Thanks guys!

Aren't there other flavors your could try? I, personally, would hate both the flavors you tried out.
And at $1.25 a slice you are basically paying for 3 cakes (the one included in your package, the new one, and the cutting fee). It's just cake.

We could try different flavors, but they charge per cake beyond the first tasting. My biggest concern was the outside butter cream icing, which wouldn't change and it was not good, no sugar, straight crisco.

Hmm... hard one. I say go with Oakmont, but 1.25/slice seems CRAZY to me. Seriously sucks that you don't like their cake. Have you talked to other knotties who have had their wedding at TCC for suggestions or to see what they did??

If you do cupcakes, does the cake cutting fee still apply?  $1.25 is crazy, especially since you'd be paying for another cake on top of that...but if you have the budget, then don't stress over this too much.

Is buttercream the only frosting option? And I agree with PP, can you get around the cake cutting fee with cupcakes or even a dessert spread, a la Signature Desserts?

Last weekend I did cake tastings at Oakmont Bakery and Prantl's in Shady Side. Prantl's was actually cheaper than Oakmont Bakery (and I, personally, like Prantl's cakes more than Oakmont Bakery). Just wanted to let you know in case you want to price Prantl's as well... it may end up being cheaper!

I'm not too concerned with the price, as long as it isn't crazy. I just want a good cake. That's all. A delicious cake with simple decorations.

I'm not a huge fan of cupcakes at weddings (IMO) I want to cut a cake. :)

Has anyone tried Paddys? I'll look into Prantls.

I think Oakmont is my go-to b/c the cake is always yummy and I just had it for my shower.

I've had Paddy Cake and about had a heart attack from the sugar. I thought it was overly sweet, for what it's worth.

I was at a wedding at TCC last year, and they served Oakmont Bakery cake - it was delicious, but I had no idea that the cake cutting fee is so much! Either way, I love Oakmont Bakery cakes and would go with it if its in budget!

I had a cake with strawberries in it once that tasted like alcohol.... It happens when the cake starts to get old. Seriously. I guarantee they gave you a cake that they had made a while ago and maybe frozen and dethawed for you. From the description of what it tasted like I bet that was what happened.

If that is the case, poor service on the 20th century club's part. I would go with another cake as well. A cake cutting fee is worth it if it means having a decent cake. Hopefully you have time for a tasting as well at a new bakery.

I agree with Nicole on the "sugaryness" of the icing on cakes from Paddy Cake, but the cake itself is moist. Every year my aunt gets a cake from them for my Grandparents wedding anniversary and for some reason everyone else in my family seems to be a huge fan but me.

We had a similar situation.  Our reception is at The LeMont.  They use Fenoglietto's Bakery.  The problem I have with Fenoglietto's is when we met them at the bridal show, they were downright rude to us. And then to top it off, when we tasted the cake, it was dry.
We will have to pay a cake cutting fee to use an outside baker, but in the end it is still cheaper than if we would have used Fenoglietto's.  We are using Cakes by Tammy.  Her prices are great and she is AMAZING to work with.  Plus, the samples we tasted from her were DELICIOUS!!!  Moist and flavorful!
Here is her website: click here.
I don't know if she will be available for your weekend, but I would check her out.  Absolutely fabulous!
    Good luck!
