Are you changing yours to FI's name or no?

My current last name is that of my ex husband. I had the option to change it back to my maiden name with the divorce but decided not to since everyone at work knew me differently.

This time around I plan to take FI's last name and will be Mrs. T instead of Mrs. H!

Yup, I will be changing from a last name that no one seems to spell or pronounce correctly (although it's not that hard) to one of the most common last names in the world.

Going from Ms. B to Mrs. W.

Also, as a fun side note, one of my best friends growing up has the same first name as me. She always went as BW, I was BB. Now, she's a BC and I'll be changing to BW.

I'm not losing my last name so much as replacing my current middle name with it. Instead of being Anna middle S. It'll be Anna S K. My last name isn't common around here, so I wanted to keep it since my middle name is really common.

Oh, this is such a source of contention with FI and me. I want to go from Darcey A T to Darcey T H... FI wants Darcey A H -- basically, he wants me to keep my middle name with his last name, and I want to replace my middle name with my maiden name.

Oy. Maybe I will just put off changing my name at all until he's just happy with getting his last name.

I'm taking FIs last name. I currently don't have a middle name so I will move my current last name to my middle name. My Mom did the same thing and that's why my parents didn't give me a middle name. My last name now is french and hard to spell and Fi's name is simple so I think it will be a nice change. Although it's going to take some getting use to!

I'm doing the same as Anna, Devious and Krikin.

I've never been fond of my middle name and I love my unique last name, although people have always struggled with the spelling.

My maiden name is also on all my professional diplomas and bar admission so I don't want docs with some non-existent name hanging in my office.

Devious - my FI was angry and annoyed at first, which struck me as very odd since I was, in fact, taking his last name. What does he care what my middle name is?! But, he has since embraced it and even wants to make it (or a shortened version of it) the middle name of at least one of our children.

I guess I am going against the grain. I probably won't change my name legally because then I would have to change it professionally. I will go by his last name socially though.

I am not changing my name. It would be difficult for me to change it professionally- I don't mind using his name socially. FI told me a few months ago that he thinks the professional reason is only about 60% of the reason why I don't want to change my name and that the other 40% is that I just don't want to... I think I agree. I don't really get why women change their names. I didn't realize what a little feminist I was until I started wedding planning.

This is THE hot topic in our household. I do not want to change my last name- I love it and have never imagined myself changing my last name. It means a lot to him that I take his name.

He's threatened to change his last name to Bonesaw if I don't take his name, so our children will have the last name Bonesaw (which is obviously horrible). He's very creative and strategic.

I've decided to just add on his last name, so I will have two. I know it will make doctor's appointments and things more difficult, but it's the solution that works best for us. I will just use my LN professionally.

I'm debating the same thing. I had changed my last name during my first marriage under pressure from my then husband. I resented him quite a bit for pressuring me into it. I changed back to my maiden name, and now marrying a much more considerate man this May.

My FI is actually open to anything I want to do. I'm debating because he has a daughter, so if I took his last name I'd have hers, which would be nice. I also have an incredibly common and boring last name, but a little anonymity in my field is not a bad thing. There are literally hundreds of people in the US with my exact First Middle Last name combo. Even though I don't share my last name with any of my family members, and I have absolutely no attachment to it as my father's name, it's still MY name. All of my degrees and my licenses have MY name on them.

However, his family name has all this interesting history and background. His family even has a town named after them from way back in the day. I know it would mean a lot to him if I took his last name. So, this is still under debate. On a side note, I know a couple that took both of their last names and created a new name out of them. It was very cool.

</div><div>I think this is why a lot of women end up changing their names. My mother never changed her name. My father's ex-wife never changed her name back (even after a second marriage), so my mother figured there were one too many Mrs. William B's in the world. I have my father's last name, and it never made one bit of difference to have a different last name from my mom. Didn't cause any problems, so that's definitely why I never struggled with the decision not to change my name- I realize it can work without difficulty.

While I'm very attached to my last name (being a huge family person and daddy's girl), I am taking my soon to be husband's last name. But I am keeping my last name as a middle name. I will being going from Ms. F to Mrs. S!
