Ireland - Self Drive or Bus Tour?

Has anyone done a bus tour through Ireland?   Like CIE Tours?   We were thinking of doing our own thing and driving with a rental car, but the bus tours seem so much more affordable.  My mom did a Globus bus tour through Italy and loved it.   I just wonder if it would be fun for the honeymoon or if we'd rather be alone together?  But then I wonder if it would be better to not have the stress of having to figure out where we're going?  I think with the bus tours you do get a lot of time to go off on your own still, and we'd be alone in the evenings, but I don't really know for sure and haven't seen any other reviews on them!

Neither.  We spent a week in Ireland a couple of months ago.  We took trains between cities and taxis between the stations and where we were staying.  From previous trips there I can tell you that the city bus systems are also fantastic.  Everything in the cities, including Dublin, was within walking distance.  For western Ireland, we took day tours out of Galway City.

There is no way I would ever drive in Ireland.  Aside from the narrow roads, the wrong side of the road, cars all being manual transmissions, be prepared for sticker shock with gasoline prices.  It equated to almost $6 a gallon when we were there.

  • Hi there!
I'm Irish so hoping to help! I know driving here can be crazy but i would defo recommend doing your own itinery as differebt Ireland seems to give different things to different people!
I would strongle recommend anywhere in the West, its properly Ireland. I almost get upset when people say they have been to Ireland and only been to Dublin. In my eyes, thats not Ireland (and I live in Dublin for work!)
Get West and you will meet the real people, see the real pubs, have the deliciosu food etc. Kerry, West Cork, Clare, Galway are the highlights bigtime. Gianys causeway is nice but its really far from most other hotspots. Do a little research and see travel wise maybe.
Driving is the best way on the west coast as trains arent great in certain parts but you will always get buses so not to worry!

Enjoy and private message if you want any extra info#!
