Tipping Question

I know that typically, you don't tip someone if they own the business....so in my case, all of my vendors are the business owners, except for my caterer/reception location and the transportation. I feel weird not tipping these people, but apparently you aren't supposed to? Thoughts on this? What are others doing? I was thinking of still tipping for good service even if they own their own company...

Re: Tipping Question

  • I tipped my photographer even though he technically owns the company. In my opinion, his service was amazing PLUS he had an assistant (who was not part owner).
  • i had the same question!?  like for example...djae melee he works for himself so do you tip him?
  • People should tip their seamstress she really works her buns off on our dress and each dress is so different. Just because seamstress is not with you like hairdresser she is doing you a tremendous service so if you happy you should tip seamstress big time
  • Good to know about the seamstress...thanks!

Exactly- Djae Melee works for himself...so do all my other vendors!

I'm thinking I probably will.  He told us that every single dime he makes he puts back into his business.  Also, even with tipping, we'd still be spending less than going with other DJ's.  I will also be tipping my hairstylist, MUA, photographer, DOC, and bartender.

<div>Same here, even if they own their own business, I still feel strange not tipping them. Especially if they do a good job. I never really heard about that rule until I saw it on these boards...up until now, I just planned on tipping everyone!</div>

  • I'll probably be tipping my photographer's second shooter since she is brought along, not part of the company.  Same thing for my hair dresser who my MUA is bringing along.  Photographer and MUA own the businesses.  Gratuity was included in our quote for catering.  Other than that, I'll probably write them a nice thank you note with a professional picture of their service (pic of centerpieces or bouquets to florist, hair to hair person, face shot to MUA)  and of course writing them reviews on TK and wedding wire.

  • So how much do you typically tip? is it a percentage? is it an odd amount? I agree that some vendors definitely need to be tipped but am just not sure what is the "norm."

I will say anyone using DATTCO for transportation-tip is already included in our contract so double check that kind of stuff!

  • All of my vendors had their own businesses so the only one's I tipped were my hair/makeup artists. I gave them a 20% tip.

  • LOL apparently we are all in need of a tipping 101 class...so glad I'm not the only confused one!
