Wedding venue...wedding on a boat?

My fiance and I are trying to figure out what to do. We are having a very small wedding..like no more then 80 people, but have a feeling 40-50 will show. We don't want to spend $10,000+ on a wedding and reception for such a small group and we are both laid back, so we want it to be fun and laid back. I was recently thinking about doing it on a party/tour boat on Lady Bird Lake or Lake Travis. What do you all think of this idea? And in your opinion, what would be the best time of year to have an outdoor wedding in Austin? We just moved here... want it to be nice but cool at night.

    I love the boat idea. I love boating though. The only problem I could see would be someone maybe getting sick. But that would probably be rare since it's just on a lake. I personally love the weather here in Austin in October, November, and May. You do have to factor rain in though, but here in Texas you can't ever predict the rain.

    I know there is a company that does riverboat cruises on Lady Bird lake that include dinner, and you could possibly rent out the entire boat for your reception.  That will probably be a little nicer than the party barges on Lake Travis or Lake Austin.  I also think May and October are the nicest months in Austin--warm during the day (in the 80's) and cooler at night.

    i went to a wedding reception on a boat on lady bird lake a few years ago and am doing my own rehearsal dinner there.  there are a couple of companies that are right in front of the hyatt on lady bird - as pp said, you can do a seated dinner, or bring your own food & alcohol (that's what we're doing).  our wedding is at the end of october, which i think is one of the nicer months in austin - the main thing i'm worried about is the possibility of rain.  also because we're doing a rehearsal dinner (not a reception), we might have to start after sunset and miss the sunset itself & the bats (which would be a nice thing to see for the out of town guests).

    I haven't been to any receptions on a boat near Austin, but I did go to one on Clear Lake. It was really hot, so I would choose a cooler month to do it in. Plus they had to change the table around for the ceremony, and it was kinda cramped. It was unique, and if you love being on the water, it will certainly be cool for you. Hope it works out for you!!

    Try looking into the Flagship on Lake Travis. We did not opt for this because #1 once your guests are on, they are stuck until its over #2 we had to pick Oct or March which in either month it gets chilly after the sun sets esp on the lake.

    I love the idea though!

    I am having my reception on a boat on Lake Austin through Lake Austin Riverboats (http://austinriverboats.com/). They have two different boats to choose from. I am using the larger one b/c my wedding will be about 100 people, but the smaller one is newer and looks a bit nicer. They cost the same and both boats depart right next to Hula Hut. If you do catering through them, they charge $38/person for the boat rental and catering (not including alcohol).

    You might want to run your boat idea across your & your FI's immediate family or attendees. While it sounds like fun in theory, some guests may experience motion sickness (no matter how calm the water) and others wouldn't want to be 'trapped' on a boat until your shindig is over. Just some thoughts to consider. I know these two things were the reasons we couldn't have a boat as the venue.
