Yearly traditions?

I went to Alfred for my undergrad.  Every year they have Hot Dog Day - which is a VERY big deal.  Alfred is a super small town, so they close Main Street down for the fair portion of it.  There is Mud Olympics, a "Fun Bun Run," Hot Dog Eating Competition, Ice Cream Social, Carnival Rides, tons of vendors and usually a few other things thrown into the mix.  Last night OAR performed.  Most of the students celebrate the entire week leading up to Hot Dog Day.  I know it sounds silly, but it's a lot of fun.

Anyways, I was able to go for 5 consecutive years (4 year's as a student and then the year after for sentimental reasons).  This is my second year not going and seeing everyone's awesome FB posts is making me sad that I can't be there (even though the weather is supposed to be gross).  Fun fact: My parents also went to school in Alfred in the 70's and my dad was there for the very first HDD.

Anyways, what annual traditions do you have from school/work/family/friends?

Re: Yearly traditions?

  • Most of my school-related traditions revolve around my sorority.  The one I definitely miss the most is bids day AKA Christmas.  Everytime it rolls around and I can't go and have to stalk it out on FB I get so sad!

One that just passed was GREAT day, it's an acronym that stands for something, but noone really knows what.  It's always the Tuesday in the third week of April.  It's meant for students to do presentations to other students, faculty, and professionals on research they've done throughout the year.  Most students avoid it like the plague though and spend the day drinking.  There's just something about wearing a sundress and playing in the sun with your friends that makes me so happy!  Sometimes a frat will even rent a bounce-house which is just awesome.

  • At work, we do the cardboard box regatta in the dayhab department; all the staff and patients get together to make canoes out of cardboard boxes and see who lasts the longest on Little York Lake. There's a big barbecue, music everything - it's the one day of work I look forward to...

  • My masters swim team celebrates Festivus (from Seinfeld!) every year! It's a "floating holiday" so sometimes it's in November, sometimes it's in February...always a good time! We participate in the airing of grievances (not so much the feats of strength), we watch the Seinfeld episode (and commentary!) expaining the origins, and we do an exchange of "regifts." It is one of the highlights of my year! Oh, and one of our team members is a lifeguard at a near-by pool, so he is responsible for bringing a metal pole (from the backstroke flags!)
  • I have been the Vice President and Student Senate Chairperson of my school's Student Government Association for two years now. we have a seperate organization that does programming, but..man.. as a part of Student Life you end up attending everything. Yesterday I came in the office and there in front of me was waffle bar!! what better way to end a week haha! The guy was there for several hours making waffles for whoever stopped by.
one of my favorite events is what we call April in Paris. It's a huge donors dinner in April where our hospitality/culinary department serves an amazing 7 course dinner. I get to go every year, dress up, feel fancy, be charming and explain to rich people why we need more money :D

as of family traditions, in Latvia where I come from we celebrate Midsummersfest - the longest day of the year. it's a very nature related event that everybody loves. it involves camping, doing campfire, music, good outdoors food, family, friends...beer...beer and cheese....more beer... :P
our wedding is going to be on Midsummerfest night this year! forever and ever I will be able to have an awesome party for my wedding anniverary :)

  • My sorority had a ton of stuff.

Where I went to school last, they had a few traditions.  In the fall, we would have a carnival on one of the streets of the campus.  In the spring, we had Day of Woden which was a Friday before finals week started.  This day was a fun day for students where we could get massages, run through inflatable mazes, and eat dinner on the quad.  We also had a concert that night where bands like OAR perform.

  • Our school made a list of 54 things to do at NC State.

Some of the big ones are:

I think one of the biggest is the Krispy Kreme Challenge. You start at the belltower, run 2 miles to the Krispy Kreme downtown, eat a dozen donuts, and then run 2 miles back to the belltower (all in under an hour).

The Red and White game (Spring scrimmage game) is also a pretty big deal. It was this past Saturday and we had to miss it because of my cousin's wedding.

Campout for NC State vs. Carolina tickets.
