Concealed handgun permit

My FI wants me to get a concealed handgun permit. I am seriously thinking about it, I like to shoot, and all of my family has guns. Do any of you have one? After Katrina, and all of the 504's that moved in, it does not sound like a bad idea.  I never want to use one, but I never want to need a spare tire either... Any thoughts?

I don't think it's a bad idea. And it's not unusual in this area for people to have their concealed handgun permit.

It's not a bad idea, but my FI (he's a police officer) always says to only have a CHL if you KNOW you are 100% completely capable of taking someones life. Otherwise, if you have a moment of hesitation they can take it from you and use it on you.

I'm from the 713...but now live in the 281..and have an 832 area code for my cell..what does that mean?

Pardon the non-P.C., but offending someone was not the intention.  I am just telling it as I heard it. I also have friends in Baton Rouge who tell me that watching the nightly news segment ends up being, in essence, the "Ghetto Update..." The "thugs" and "gangstas" who moved in from the 504 area code, have greatly increased the crime there also.  It is ugly, but it is true.  Embarassed

TXSun-Thanks for the Spectre referral, I really appreciate it!

miss67c- alot of the thugs are self described "504's", as that is what they call themselves. and that area code gets spraypainted on walls and concrete...

The following statement is not referring to race, but to the danger.
I love going to New Orleans, but it, like any other city, has a dark(bad people) side to it, just like Houston does, and that dark side is why I am applying for my permit.

Exactly why you probably should not have just grouped it to the "504" most of my family is from the "504" so yes the remark was offensive - for the future just say you want it for safety purposes. Also...Katrina was 6 years ago let's move on

Wow, ask a question, give your reason, get called names...
Thank you Houston Gun Class for signing up just to respond! I really appreciate that!
I hope other level headed ladies see that and the positive things in this thread and learn something good, and also learn that there are females out there waiting to take offense with out saying, "would you care to edit that and rephrase it? Some here might take offense."
This is transferrable to many conversations...
I saw one guy joking with another guy about humping him, and the observation was made- "When gay sex jokes like that are made, no one involved walks away looking straight."

Generally, people should have enough decency, knowledge and common sense to not have to be edited, but I guess that's asking too much.

If you "loved going to New Orleans", you would think you would know enough about it to realize what you were saying.

<div>Oh good, you brought gay jokes, too...</div><div>Are you kidding with this?!?  If you're going to backpedal, at least have the decency to do it somewhat convincingly.  Adding another offensive "joke" to your response doesn't cancel out your other offensive remarks.  I don't mean to attack you, I'm just seriously baffled.</div>

What positive? That you want to carry a gun b/c you fear "504" people. Pls exit to the left. Thank you.

You're an adult, and we're not your parents to tell you to be respectful of others. Know that you are on the internet, this is a public board, and that you WILL offend people with your views. You can't make everyone happy. Lesson #1

Lesson #2: Don't stir the pot, use certain "words", and then expect not to get splashback. You dish it out, expect to get it in return. And everyone responding here, is/was a knottie for quite some time now.

And now you want to play the sexuality card? Come on. Apples and oranges. Next you are going to start with politics and stay at home moms. Just do yourself the favor. If you dont like it, dont respond, and don't bother reading it. Its not hard to do.

Things would be very different if you would have said "What are your thoughts on getting a CHL. I have noticed a high crime rate, and I think I would feel safer." Not throwing stones at people when you live in a glass house.
  • edited December 2011
I don't have my CHL, but my fiance does and we have two handguns in our home. I've gone to the shooting range quite a bit and I think that's important if you have them in your home.

There are pros and cons to getting your CHL from what I can tell. I know that he is more liable NOW than he was before. As in.... the law holds him more accountable BECAUSE he has his CHL.

Whether you get it or not, you should definitely learn to shoot! It's one of those life skills you should have to defend yourself.

That is actually against the Knot's terms of use and they have been reported for spaming. Self promotion is not allowed like that.
  • edited December 2011
it sounds like you might live in a bad neighborhood if you so scared. maybe you should move instead of getting a concealed hand gun license.  before getting that license you should probably take a self defense course. if you can't physically defend yourself, you might end up losing control of your weapon and have it used against you. food for thought... a CHL is not for everyone.
  • edited December 2011
Well, after all of that, did you apply for your CHP? Like I said, it was one of the best decisions I ever made.
  • edited December 2011
Yes, I did, Thank you for asking. I also am the proud owner of a Glock 9mm compact.
    It is nice!
