Downtown Detroit hotels

Hi ladies!

I just got off the phone with the Westin Book Cadillac and they have no available suites for August 17th, 2013! I am going to call MGM Grand Casino, MotorCity Casino, Greektown Casino and the Ren Cen, but are there any other hotels you might recomend? My ceremony and reception are being held at the Colony Club so I want to find someplace in downtown.

Also, does anyone know if there is some big event going on then which may be the cause?

Thanks in advance!

To be fair, the Atheneum is the only hotel I've ever stayed at downtown!
  • There is the Hilton Garden Inn and also the Marriott Courtyward.  They are not as 5 star as those you mentioned, but nice and probably more affordable.  I have been in rooms at all of those you mentioned and my biggest advice would be to go with one of the casinos over the Ren Cen.  All the casinos hotel rooms are much more modern and chic.  Hope this helps!

  • Are you booking a block there or just a suite for you and your hubby?

I have no clue what might be going on downtown at that time in August, but I do find it odd the Westin doesn't have any suites available. Who did you speak to -- the general reservations line or their group sales manager? I'd call the group sales manager and try to book a block of rooms. If you do, and if so many rooms are used, you actually get a suite for the price of the regular room. This is what we're doing.

If the Westin truly doesn't work, the casino hotels are nice, but not easily walkable from the Colony Club like the Westin is (I live right in between the CC and the Westin, so I'm familiar with the area). Just something to think about if you have guests staying there too.

  • Thank you for the suggestion of the Atheneum, I will look into that!

At the time of my call I was only attempting to book the suite for my hubby and I. I wasn't going to try and book a block until a little closer since we still don't even have our guest list cemented, but now I am concerned that rooms may be already getting full (for whatever reason).

Either way, thank you for the suggestions!
  • I have stayed at the Atheneum Suites and the Hilton Garden Inn (both walking distance to Comerica Park & Ford Field). LOVE Atheneum Suites. Hilton Garden Inn not bad.

Not sure if there is something major going on, I checked the convention bureau website and there's nothing that far out. My guess is because it's one of the nicest hotels in downtown other people booked all the suites for their events/weddings.
  • It might be a bit early to book your block, but on the other hand, it's never too early. I'd go that route and see if you have any better luck with their group sales manager. The way blocks work is that you can only reserve a max # of rooms, so you don't necessarily need to know your guest list. As long as you think people are going to be using a hotel.

You don't have to put a deposit down and they just release the rooms that aren't booked, so you're not responsible if your block doesn't fill up.

  • I booked my block of rooms with the Westin last month because I found out there is a Tigers/White Sox game IN Detroit on my wedding day and chances are it will book up fast!

There is the Milner in Detroit, but I can't say I'd RECOMMEND anyone stay there. Ratings are kind of abysmal for it and the one time I stayed there I was less than impressed. It is, however, the most budget friendly of all hotels in Detroit (If you do a block of rooms with them, the price is something like $65 a room).

Next step up would be the Holiday Inn Express, which just so happens to be across the street from the Westin. This was originally going to be my first choice, and I even called to try to block off some rooms...however, the gentleman I left a message with said he would call me back to work out details and NEVER did. The lack of follow through and then later reading reviews where past customers talked about getting BED BUGS from the Holiday Inn (more than one instance months apart), pursuaded me that the pricier Westin across the street was the way to go!

There's also the Doubletree (Hilton). It's a pretty nice hotel, slightly dated but functional (clicky). One of the ladies working the front desk was VERY nice and actually gave us a tour and showed us some of the rooms. They aren't the biggest rooms ever, but they weren't bad. We opted against this one, just because it is a further distance from where we are going to be in Detroit. (If memory serves it was less expensive than the Westin though)

Definitely get yourself a room and block off rooms for your guests ASAP. If there is any kind of sporting event going on IN Detroit the day you're looking at, rooms can book up extremely fast! Better to block off too many rooms now than not enough and then the hotel is booked!

  • Try contacting Sharonda at the Westin for better assistance - she can probably get you a block that far out.  If not - try the Fort Shelby (double tree) or the Atheneum as mentioned...

I would definately NOT stay at the Milner. FI and I and a couple friends stayed there for St. Patty's Day and all we could do was laugh at how outdated it is. It was built in 1917 and really hasn't been updated too much since then. Our bed was broken, the couch in the room was disgusting to look at, nearly all the windows were either broken, so you can't open them, or had no screen. Our friend stayed on the 9th floor and it was like 90 degrees so he opened one of the windows, which proceeded to fall off and into the room. When we told the front desk the maintenance man went up, put the window back on and propped it open with an empty beer can that was in the elevator! Because it was St. Patty's day our rooms were over $110 for each room!
