Florist Dilemmia - Advice Please, Ladies!

Hi Ladies,

I have a big decision to make about a florist and quickly. I don't want to wait too long to book and have been keeping some people waiting and could use your help and advice!

So here's what's going on. I've been meeting with florists, getting quotes and such. I had picked a florist when my photographer contacts me and says shes started doing floral stuff for weddings. So, I met with her to discuss. She said she could cut me a good deal on our flowers and since I haven't signed a contract or sent in a deposit yet, I thought it was a good idea.

She can do all ceremony flowers plus reception centerpieces and extras for about 1000. The other florist will do ONLY ceremony flowers (we're talking bear-bones here, no extras at all) for 800.

I don't know what to do. I would like to have some professional help with the centerpieces, but I also feel that I can make something nice myself. My big caveat here is that the first florist (not the photographer) is very talented and I KNOW she will make beautiful things, even if we can only afford a few things with her. With my photographer, we will get a lot more, but she is just starting out and I will be taking a gamble on quality. I know she will do the best she can, but the lack of experience makes me nervous. She has been practicing, but has never actually done a wedding (for flowers) before. I think she has other brides booked though, just hasn't had the wedding happen yet.

Advice?  Thanks ladies! I appreciate any thoughts.

  • Hmmm I don't know what to say...  I would love to say that I would give the new person a chance, but chances are I probably would go with the person I know is great.

  • I am not sure how early you are going to start your photography the day of but if you let your photographer do them will she be done in enough time to take pictures of you getting ready and everything else you would like photos of? Can she make you a mock centerpiece that she can show you before you make a deposit? IMHO I would stick with the 2nd florist or maybe look at 1 more florist who would do flowers for both ceremony and reception... GL

Ask your photographer if she can make you a mock centrepiece, the ones I have spoken with are doing so before I decide.

Also ask your photographer how she deals with setting up prior to the reception/ceremony & taking pictures at the same time.

To be honest, I would probably use the person I know is experienced for 2 reasons, decor is very important to me & my wedding photos are very important to me and I dont want either of them to be compromised.

  • I am a florist.. So I would be scared of having the photographer do my flowers. But I totally understand how expensive flowers can be. My suggestion would be to use them both, to cut costs but still get the quality where it's most important. Centerpieces are usually pretty easy. Depending on how elaborate you want your ceremony flowers, I would probably get the florist to do those as well as your bouquet. I also agree to have the photographer make a mock centerpiece for you to make sure you like her work. How soon is your wedding?
  • Thanks ladies. I too was concerned about the timing with the photographer doing both flowers and photography. She told me she has some staff who would do set-up so she can take photos, and made it seem like it wouldn't be an issue. She's such a nice person and is very excited about everything, I'm just not sure what to do. And I don't want to keep this other florist on hold any longer either!

My wedding isn't until May 25. I have some time, and maybe I will just hire the more experience florist and make my own centerpieces. Argh. Decisions decisions!
