NOT LEGALLY MARRIED this weekend!

Hi Gals, I need your thoughts.

We are supposed to get married in 2 days. I just found out from our priest that he has totally screwed up, and we cannot be legally married on Saturday. We cannot even go to city hall this Saturday on such short notice.

1) drive to Ontario and get legally married tonight, making saturday a show

2) have the religious "wedding" on saturday and go to our own city hall next week

Either way we are putting on a show. Tell the guests? Not tell the guests? Cancel?

Re: NOT LEGALLY MARRIED this weekend!

  • what a moron!!!!  where are you from? if ontario is close enough you should get married tonight and not tell guests that Saturday is a "show".  Go through all the norms of a wedding ceremony, even prtend to sign docs if you want!
  • Breathe...it's going to be ok!

I would go and get married before the wedding.  Your wedding day will still be your wedding day, and nothing is going to change that.  Saturday won't just be for show, I promise.  My cousin had to get legally married a few days before her actual wedding, and it was one of the most beautiful weddings that I've ever been to.  No one knew that she had gotten legally married a few days before until later, and even then no one cared.  I wouldn't tell your guests, because then people are going to turn it into a bigger deal than it is.

  • I know of a couple weddings where, due to legality, they did it quietly themselves before and then had a wedding, where they didn't tell people, "Hey, we did this legally a couple of days ago." Go for that, in my opionion.

  • alright thanks ladies, thank goodness we live close to the quebec/ontario border!

  • I would hop over to ontario and have it done... (I am in Gatineau) and if I was in that situation that is what we would have done

either way it won't change your wedding day whatsoever... you will still be celebrating and marrying your best friend!
  • That sucks.  What happened that he can't legally marry you on Saturday?

I would do as other suggested and get married before and just not say anything.  It's not like it's a question someone would think to ask just out of no where, so you really don't have to ever tell anyone.

  • I agree with the rest...go get married now and have the ceremony on Saturday as planned but don't say anything or it will become a big deal for some. Can I ask why you can't be married on Saturday?
  • well ladies, we pulled it off, by saying a prayer and breaking the speed limit

we are not going out of our way to announce that we are legally married, but we we will tell the truth if someone asks later. The religious vows are still very important to us.

the short version is that the priest had legal problem with his church, but found a "replacement" priest, then a replacement notary, then the notary informs him that the process will take a month, and he never told us until today

I will post the long version later.
