Winter Wedding in May

My fiance and I are planning a winter wedding but plan on getting married in May. We wanted to do a snowflake theme for our wedding but were worried about actually having the wedding in winter. My work schedule also rotates so I only get weekends off about every 3 months so it was either do it in late Jan/early Feb or in May. As many people in our families already have a bunch of stuff planned around the Jan/Feb time, we figured May would be best. Also, since we live in Wisconsin we thought weather-wise it would be better to do it in May so we don't have to worry about people getting stranded due to weather or anything happening. He knows how much I love snowflakes and knows how much I wanted my wedding to be blue/silver/white with a snowflake theme so he said we should go ahead and still do that theme. He says it is OUR wedding, who cares what others think or say. Is it still weird to do it in May when the weather is a bit nicer? My mom keeps telling us that by that point people are sick of snow and won't want to see it anymore.  Some people we have told about it are loving our theme and ar very excited for it. Our flower lady was ecstatic when I told her the theme. Others have thought we were crazy. Are we crazy?

    Well, you're definitely ummm... independent thinkers?  Wacky, crazy, um, yeah, sure, but meant only in a kind hearted way.  I would find it odd if I were a guest, but as long as you're being a good host to your guests, I don't think anyone is going to get upset about it.  Some people will definitely find it strange, but if you don't care about that, then there's no harm.  If you really want a snow themed wedding but feel weird about having it in May, how about Feb or March?  It still snows then but it's less likely that the weather will give you trouble.  Can't you ask off for the week/weekend of the wedding?  You're going to want to take a few days off before the wedding anyway.  Good luck!

    We had thought about having it in February but our families both have too much going on during that time to have a wedding than. May was when worked for our families and especially us. I work a job where we are a 24/7 365 days/week facility so it is very hard to get days off. May was when worked so I could get time off before the wedding and after the wedding. We know it will be a bit weird and different o have snowflakes than BUT it is the very beginning of May when it HAS snowed around here before and also we don't plan on having a TON of snowflakes. Anyone and everyone that knows me will complete understand what we are doing. We aren't going to make it look like snowflakes threw up all over the reception place. We are going to use them sparingly. Just a few decorations here and there. We are the type of couple who say this is OUR special day so we are going to do what WE want to do. We don't care what others have to say about it. Like I had before, a lot of people we had mentioned it to were very excited for it and understand the kind of couple we are and why we are doing it, when we are doing it.  Thank you :)

    Where do you live? I am in Eagle River....my wedding day is April 30th, and this past year it was 79 degrees April 30th, and the following weekend, May 7th snowed 6 INCHES!! So you never know!!!
    It is different, but it's your wedding....do what you want. And you are in Wisconsin!

    I wouldn't go overboard with the theme, subtle snow hints and objects ... I would do more of a play on the colors.

    Keep in mind that the weather is completely unpredictable, you could have snow, or you could be like my parents who got married in may and it was over 90 degrees (snow theme + 90 degress would be very odd).

    Like I said, it's nontraditional, but there's nothing WRONG with it at all.  If you don't care what a few people think, then go for it-this is a situation where you get to do whatever you want-it has nothing to do with etiquette or being a good host.  Have a great time with it!

    I would probably skip the snowflakes and stick with the colors (blue, ice blue, white, silver).  If I went to a wedding in May with snowflakes I would think it was strange, but I wouldn't have a bad time because of it.

    I say - go for it! In high school, our prom was at the tail end of April and our theme was still "Frozen in Time" - tons of silver and blue, frosted branches and the like, and people loved it. Winter can be a very romantic time, and it's your wedding - do what you want! :)

    It sounds like your mind is made up, so go for it.  Maybe be playful with it. May technically is getting on the later edge of spring, and I agree with pp that snowflakes might be weird, but if it's a bit of a joke, then people will accept it.

    I am a winter bride, well I guess technically late fall, and I got enough eyerolls from my family about the date to run my own bakery!  I love Christmas so they understood.  We are having lots of Christmasy things even though our colors are black, white and silver.

    GO FOR IT!  Just like with any theme, don't go overboard.  I always suggest that with a "theme" or something meaningful that not everyone will necessarily get, a cute little card on the tables incorporating what they are seeing is always a nice touch and eliminates all the questions.

    Do what YOU and your FI want. I am a bride who got married this past weekend and went to the beat of our own drummer. My FI (now husband) knows that I love Halloween and let me go full throttle. Was my hard core Catholic mother not happy? Yup, but guess what, she got over it!

    Do things your way and don't worry about what others think. So many people, including the caterer and event site coordinator, told me that they thought our wedding was epic and that it wasn't another boring wedding. So who cares if it's May and you want snowflakes? I think it rocks that you think outside of the box :o)

    I love your idea of a winter theme.  The colors could be done so beautifully.  Maybe lay a little low on the snowflakes - do them subtly like on cocktail naptins or confetti.

    Thanks for your opinions guys. I appreciate them all. I didn't plan on going overboard with the snowflakes. I planned on trying to be a little subtle with them and mostly playing around with the colors. The centerpieces are going to be more about the color than the snowflakes.The snowflakes will mostly be some things with my flowers and than we have some snowflake tea light holders to put on some of the misc tables. I also found some blue and silver metallic snowflake things to hang somewhere but they are mostly about the colors.  My FI picked out the cake topper and chose one where the bride is fishing for the groom (he is a big fisherman and everyone knows it). He knows it doesn't really go with the snow theme but he really liked it so we were talking of making it look like i was ice fishing him out of a lake (like a melting lake). For the whole bride/groom kiss thing, he wants to make people have to fish for stuff to get us to kiss so that's why he wanted to do a fishing cake topper. We wanted a piece of me and a piece of him in the wedding. The occasional snowflake is me and the fishing is him. I am definitely excited to see how it all turns out!
