Undergarment Help

Hello
I am a plus size bride and I just got engaged and I haven't shopped for my dress yet because our wedding isn't for a few years. I am just wondering what undergarments I should bring when I begin to try on dresses for me? I don't like strapless bras but I have seen a lot shows where women are trying on dresses [say yes to the dress] are wearing them. I think that is my main priority is to get that first.

Anything else I should get?

Re: Undergarment Help

  • If you prefer a corset or longline bra to ordinary strapless, bring one of those instead.  The reason you want to avoid straps is it will make it easier to see what a strapless dress will really look like.

In general, if you have shaping garments in mind, it's nice, (but not required) to wear them.  If not, just stick to modest underwear, since whoever is helping you into the dresses will see you in them.

  • Underwear that covers your butt for when the bridal lady helps lace up your dress, otherwise nothing special since they will have undergarments they will put you in and of course try to sell it to you
  • definitely go modest, because people will see you in your underwear.  Other than that, if you're planning to do a longline or shapewear it doesn't hurt to bring it.  Bigger chains like Davids will let you try on a longline (and generally encourage it), I've heard some smaller boutiques don't have them for you to use and try on.

In all reality it's important to have the actual underwear for the fittings, not when shopping.  But a bra with straps would probably be distracting if you're trying on a lot of strapless.  I shopped at Davids, so I wore their longline when shopping, then when I actually picked mine up I decided to try it without anything and I'm so glad I did because it looked good and was SO much more comfortable.  I'm glad I didn't spend the money on a longline before even trying it without!
  • I had on a strapless bra and modest underwear that covers your butt. I didn't bring any shoes or jewlery; that was for my fittings.
  • What is a longline bra?
  • One that has a very wide band/corset that reaches anywhere from near bottom of ribcage to mid-waist/belly-button.

  • Oh okay. I think the style of dress I want is to have straps or laced sleeves - I read that if you are plus sized it's good to have straps for added support.
