Candy Buffet

How much candy should we purchase? We are having 150 people. I am sure that not everyone will take candy. Don't want to have too much left over or not enough. Advice is great! Thanks!!

Re: Candy Buffet

  • Also, what types of candies would you recommend?
  • 1/2 lb per guest is the guideline we used - Buy whatever candy you and your FI love that fits in with your color scheme!
  • I've also heard the 1/2 lb per guest guideline, but the candy bar is similar to the cake in that one of its purposes is to look pretty, especially in pictures.  Since it will become part of the decor (though a very yummy part!), you'll probably want to go a bit over that if sticking to the guideline means that you'll have jars that are only half-full.  Worse case scenario is that you have candy leftover, but if you know any kids you should be able to take care of that quite easily!

  • I always see 1/2 lb. per person on here but IMO 1/4 lb. pp is more accurate if you don't want a lot left over.  I did 1/2 lb. and had alot left over for a wedding for 100 people (but planned for 150).
  • I am also doing a candy bar for my wedding in May.  We got the pint size chinese boxes for people to put their candy in, and are guessing about a 1/2 lb of candy a person, but are assuming that not everyone will be taking candy, and others will be taking more than their share.  Also, we chose candy based on the colors of my wedding.  My colors are a berry (burgundy) color, silver and white, so all of my candies are one of these colors.  It was actually a lot easier than I expected to find the colors I needed as candy bars are being extremely popular.  I love the idea of having my colors match the candy, but I know a lot of people choose candies that are their favorites or candies that they enjoyed while growing up.  It's totally up to you though! Good luck!

  • 1/2 lb per person is generally recommended. It's better to have too much of anything than to run out. Get whatever candy you and your guests like, and don't pay attention to color. Reason being is that it allows you a wider variety of candy that guests will actually eat and enjoy, as opposed to limited selections when you try to color-match anything.
  • I've also heard between 1/4 and 1/2 pounds per guest. However, if you are also having cake or other desserts, I'd imagine you would be fine with 1/4 lb per guests as they'll have enough sugar from other areas.

For the candy itself I'd say go with the candies you and your fiance love. It doesn't really matter if they match your wedding colors or not. The visual impact of the candy bar will be great no matter what.

    Best of luck!
  • Thanks for asking this question.  I'm doing a candy buffet, too, and didn't know how much candy to purchase.  This is quite helpful.  Thanks ladies!
  • The 1/4 to half a pound rule sounds pretty good to me, I had also heard of taking one of your containers to the bulk candy section of the grocery store, filling it and weighing to see how much it holds, then multiply that number by the number of guests and add a few pounds. That might help you narrow down the number of pounds too!
