Wedding Woes

sprained ankle and 3 days til I DO

Looking for some advice on how to get through the big day with a severely sprained ankle.  It's been iced and elevated for a day and a half.  I've gone to the ER and have meds to control swelling, but am worried about enjoying the wedding I spent 18 months planning?  Any thoughts???

Did you see a Dr?  If so, what did they advise?

You need to elevate and ice for the next 3 days. No walking around. A sprain usually heals pretty quickly with rest.

<div>Don't listen to LS - it depends on the severity of the sprain. i sprained my ankle last summer and was in a walking cast for 2 months, and a brace for another 2-3. I had to go to PT. </div><div>
</div><div>Follow Dr. instructions on care (ice, elevation, etc.) - consider renting/buying a travel wheelchair if you really can't get around (crutches might be next to impossible). If you're going on a honeymoon, this will also come in handy. If you have a very simple sprain and can just walk it off, great. </div>

My goodness, Barbie! I've never heard of a sprain that bad. How did you do that?

I went to the VA hospital since I'm a vet and they didn't really give me advice.  They just determined that it was a sprain and not broken with a x-ray.  Then they set me up with an air brace.  I've been following the typical treatment of icing and elevating.

LS, sprains can be just as bad as a broken bone. H slipped off a landing while repairing a guardrail of all things. He fell to the ground in excruciating pain, his eyes welled up, he thought he might black out, and he almost vomited. H landed next to his truck. When the wave of pain subsided he looked up to see his two dogs looking down at him. "What are you doing down there, dad?"

The swelling and bruising was terrible. The bruising went up almost mid-calf and down to his toes.

i was walking on flat ground - through a parking lot in tennis shoes. i stepped funny, and basically landed with my foot completely sideways. i tried to walk it off, but my foot/ankle/calf was 3x it's normal size and purple by the next day. This was also a repeat sprain.

I can walk in 4in heels with no issue, but tennis shoes on flat ground? forget it.

It was a few days before he could walk without too much pain, but it was months before it really felt healed.

Barbie, you and I could be sprain twins.

My sophomore year in college, I insisted on playing basketball almost every night, despite having constant small sprains. Finally, I got an absolutely awful high-ankle sprain that made me use crutches. My entire foot from mid-calf down was purple - I'm talking the bottom of my foot, between my toes, my heel, EVERYTHING was purple. I've always kicked myself for not taking a picture of it. It was epic.

Oh my goodness, that sucks!  And I can certainly sympathize!!  I BROKE my foot about a month ago-- and my wedding is currently 8 weeks away.  Look at it this way-- at least you had time to get everything done before your wedding and hopefully were able to work out and get in shape before the injury happened.  (I know that's probably small consolation.)

As I post this, I know your wedding is now past, and I truly hope everything went well for you and that you had a fabulous day.  Just know that you are not the only one to have gone through this.  Best of luck.
