NWR! Birth control question...

Have any of you experienced extreme moodiness/lack of sex drive with birth control pills? I'm on tri-sprintec. I went back on it about 4 months and I feel SO angry, irritable, and just plain moody as hell all the time! I hate that I feel like this! I'm normally a very laid back and mellow person. And i know this sounds crazy but I'm hesitant to go off of it because I have my "friend" right where I want it....so it will not interfere with the wedding/ honeymoon!

Re: NWR! Birth control question...

  • I would for sure go talk to your doctor and see if there is an alternative. I have never had mood swings like that but I know a few people who have. It may just be a matter of switching birth control types, and that doesn't necessarily have to mess with your cycle. Plus, even if changing birth control does make your period come at a different time, you can always skip it over the wedding/honeymoon. I have had my period fall during a time I was on a beach vacation and it also fell on my high school prom, and both times I skipped my sugar pills and continued on with the hormone pills and was able to skip my period. This is safe to do, by the way :)

  • i had issues with one type of birth control that i was on, including crazy mood swings. my gyno put me on another type, and it has been smooth sailing ever since. just be open and honest with your doc about your side effects and they will be able to guide you to another form of BC that will work better with your body. (my fiance is a pharmacist and i have asked him thousands of BC related questions for myself and for my friends, and this is one of those questions that i have asked him before!)
  • I just went off Depo because it made me Super Bitch. Seriously, I'd go from happy to wanting to "cutabitch" in a millisecond. It also made me gain 50 pounds and I couldn't lose it.

Be honest with your doctor and if you're not happy, get off it. Many people have and survive their "friend" during their wedding and honeymoon. It might suck to have it but your health and mental health is a wee bit more important.

  • Thanks ladies! I'm definitely going to call my doctor!
  • I took Yaz for around 2 months but the moodiness became too much for me. I became really anxious and upset all the time so I stopped.
  • Talking to your doctor is probably your best option. Write everything down that you want to discuss so you can be sure to relay everything to your doctor without forgetting any concerns.

I was on the pill when I was younger, but it just didn't work well for me.  I switched to depo and was on it for 8 years which made me gain weight (one of the major side effects of depo like PP said). I recently switched to Mirena (I do not have kids and I want to wait a little while to have them) and besides the insertion, which did cause a lot of pain, I absolutely love it and don't have to worry about a thing.
  • I had the same problem with a different BC that I got terrible migraines during my period which I got when I was younger but was able to get rid of with another BC.  I switched back to my original BC but went generic instead and I got spotting, now I'm on the name brand BC and have no problems!

  • I am on tri-sprintec now too, and I have some moody issues too; but it only seems to be right before the "friend" arrives, so I blame it on that. Sorry to hear you have issues, but yes, check with your doctor about other options you may have!

This is me exactly...I'm pretty extra emotional, and I think it has to do with Tri-sprintec...I need to make an appointment to go talk to my dr. about it when I go back to MI in April...or find a Dr. down here...
  • I have a mirena IUD and love it.  I have never had children but I could sill get it, they let woman in monogamous relationships.  No issues and I never have to worry about forgetting it
  • I'd opt for a more locally applied hormone. I am on the Nuvaring. They are really handy and the side effects are supposed to be way less intense than the pill (I have not been on the pill for quite a while, so I can't compare, but I don't notice any side effects at all). They let you plan when the friend comes around too - I take three of them in a row before inviting the friend.

Before that, I had the Mirena IUD, and I loved it. I had it for five years and the friend stayed away all the time. Plus, it's just inside, you never need to think about anything, hypereasy. It only hurt a lot to place it. And by that, I mean a lot. Since we want kids pretty soon, it didn't seem worthwhile to place another one when my last one expired.

  • I was on Yaz, like you Penny, and gained about 15 pounds along with being SUPER moody and anxious! I switched to the generic of orthotriciclin and it's been great

  • I am on the generic of Yaz called Ocella.  I have not had too many problems with it.  i do get very bad migraines during my period.  But I only have 5 more months left of taking BC before I go off.  I don't want to mess around with switching pills now plus I already have 3 months worth so I am just going to finish them up.  It is embarrassing to say but I think it has lowered my sex drive as well.  I mean we have sex several days a week but FI is always the one to initiate it.  I was not always like this I really think it has to do with the pill.

  • It does hurt a lot having it put in it was a huge negative of the iud
  • I used to be on YAZ and I loved it. I was recently on Jun-el but it was horrible and kept messing with my period so I stopped it. I was on something else before that too I can't remember the name but I was nauseous every time I would take it. I haven't been on one that is actually good so I am glad you posted this.

This is good to know.  When I told my doctor, he said that he had never heard of anyone having these problems.  I just felt like I wasn't myself and I would be sobbing for no reason.  Thankfully, FI got a vasectomy 2 years ago so there are no more worries.
  • I hate all hormonal birth control. I tried like 6 different ones and they all made me a different person.

omg thank god im not the only one lol!!! its really affecting me BAD!!! when i say i have no sex drive, i mean i have NO sex drive.zero.nada......i never used to be like that. i could literally go over a month without wanting to do it! so bad!! i went to my gyno about that a few months back when i was FIRST on this ( i went off for a couple months and then we decided that was a really dumb move) and she said it ABSOLUTELY lowers your sex drive. she suggested the nuva ring, but it was $60 a pop WITH my insurance which i think is crazy. i pay $10 now for tri-sprintec. my FI told me to just get off it and we would be careful since im not taking it once we are married anyway, but i really dont want to take that chance!!
