Appetizers and Dessert Bar

My wedding ceremony is on a Friday evening starting at 7pm followed by an appetizer reception and a dessert bar as well as cupcakes for all of my guests. There will be enough cupcakes for everyone, with some extras and then a variety of t2 dozen small cheesecakes, 4 dozen cake pops, 2 dozen cookies and 2 dozen of a bar  type dessert.

My wedding guest list is an intimate 50 and I will have a variety of 12 appetizer types and 6 dozen each of them as well as a chicken skewer display and a cheese/cracker/meat display.

I plan on noting on my invitations hors d'oeuvres reception to follow.

What are your thoughs on this, as a whole?

I think that sounds fine, you're having 864 pieces of hors d'ouerves (17 per person), plus two displays, and 175 pieces of dessert (3 per person).  Just make sure you have a nice mix of more substantial hors d'ouerves if you're serving alcohol.  Are you having the apps hand passed or buffet style?  I always seem to miss the servers passing the hors d'ouerves, so for something like this where they are the meal, I would rather see it on a table, but that's totally my personal preference.

I wouldn't feel the need to put hors d'oeurves reception, because you're really serving a full meal.  When I see hors d'ouerves reception I think I'm going to need a snack later on.
  • Thanks!! I hate passed hors d'ouerves as well, and with so many, I think buffet style works better anyway. My colors are black and white and I'm going to have all of the food on tables with small chalk boards that definite what each item is (not tacky chalkboard, it's kind of hard to explain, I've seen in all over Pinterest).

We are having alchohol, and I think there is a good mix of breads, meats, potato type options. There are a few seafood as the catering company is a top notch raw bar in Seattle, apparently their food is amazing. I can't wait to go in for the tasting :)

  • It sounds good.  I also agree that it's enough for a full meal.  I don't think you need warn anyone.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I'd also second that since it starts at 7pm, and you are serving a ton of apps, I don't think you need to warn anyone. That's definitely enough for a meal for me.

I would probably cut back on the number of appetizers (maybe 8 or 9) and in turn offer more of the others.  As you have it now, fifty people, 72 of each variety.  I know if there are some really good appetizers, I'd be disappointed to go back and find there were none left.  Or, if I have a plate and see something I really like, I'd be more inclined to take 2 or 3 from the start thereby depleting that variety of app faster.

I'll also be honest here.  What you laid out is a standard cocktail hour for weddings I've been to.  If I attended your wedding and was socializing, enjoying the apps, I would hope that I would know at that time (if you elect not to put it on your invitation) that it's apps only.  Because I try not to load up on all of that stuff figuring there's a sitdown dinner to follow.  I'd be pretty ticked off if I didn't eat beforehand, only had a few apps, THEN found out there was no dinner, and all the apps were gone.

My FI would also probably be starving.  If he found out at the reception that it was apps only, you'd be going through them even faster.  I doubt that would qualify as a dinner to him....we'd probably be cutting out early and hitting up a late night pizza joint for a few slices.
