Bahaha...horse dancing is an Olympic sport?

Technically it's called dressage. I had no idea this existed, but I just lost 2 hours of my life on YouTube. Enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKQgTiqhPbw  (Try and watch until the 2 minute mark. This horse is a genius.)

It's intense, takes years to train, and is much harder than it looks.

I've ridden the Prix St George movements on trained horses (3 levels below Olympic) and have a 1st level horse and a 2nd level horse. It's a good sport for control freaks. LOL

There is also 3 day eventing (Dressage, Jumping, and Cross Country jumping) and Stadium Jumping in the Olympics.

Google Jan Ebling, he's riding Ann Romney's horse for the US team this year. And, Reiner Klimke is one of my favorites to watch on You Tube.

  • I watched around the 2 minute mark, were you talking about the sideways trotting?

I don't like the video - it's the 'new' style. Too much flash and bang and you lose the atheleticism of Dressage with movement like that. There's controversey in the Dressage world right now over the new vs old style.

(now I'll climb off my soapbox!)

Oh no, I hope I didn't offend you! I think this sport is AWESOME and I cannot believe I've never heard of it before because I am pretty animal obsessed. I was actually laughing at how amazing this particular horse seemed, but I definitely didn't get that across in my post. The 2 minute mark, he (she?) seemed to be skipping...I just cannot imagine how you would train an animal to be so controlled and respond to music like that. It seemed to me that the rider (I'm sure that's not what they are called?) wasn't making any signals to the horse, so it seemed to be all about the music. I really hope I didn't offend you; minimizing this sport was the last thing I wanted to do when posting this!

  • Dressage is so cool! I am also a horse person here - rode on my university's equestrian team and love riding in general! Excited for all the equine olympic events! Never rode dressage (I ride hunt equitation mostly) but always appreciate watching it.

  • I believe it's also on August 4th for the Gran Prix Special Freestyles.

The skipping appears to be Piaffe/Passage.

I did misunderstand your post. ;) Dressage is amazing, I love riding it.

I totally misunderstood too, the way it was written. I don't ride dressage, but have great respect for the effort, dedication and training it takes!!
