Fake nails or not?

I'm very conflicted about getting fake nails for the wedding.  I have had them for 4 years but I got them taken off 1 1/2 months ago to save money.  I know what they can do to your nails (my nails were soft and weak but with strengthening nail polish they got better in ~3wks.  However, my normal nails are kinda meh, not very strong and break frequently (even before I ever had the fakes) so I'm worried about them all being the same length, or conversely, all being REALLY short for the wedding.  I would get the fake nail material called pink (so that they are clear to look like natural nails). Also, I hate the Shellac stuff so I definitely won't be doing that.

Pros:
Look more uniform and nicer
Are much stronger - I can open cans and actually USE them for stuff
Can get them done a few days before the wedding and not worry about chipping (colored powder vs. nail polish)
Will last me all the way through the honeymoon
Once they're on, they're hassle free.

Cons:
Mess up your nails a bit
Take a little getting used to
Not as useful for somethings: I can't scratch myself as well (TMI i know, but since they're so thick they don't get itches too well)
Cost more money
Kind of hurt to take off
Takes more time to get on

Re: Fake nails or not?

  • For me fake nails are a must because I am a biter and a picker and acrylics are the only thing that save me.  So none of the cons apply to me.  But if you can just get a nice manicure on your own nails, that is what I would do.  You have a few weeks to keep them healthy and to keep applying the strengthener.  The fact that you took the acrylics off just a few months before your wedding says to me you were tired of them

You can always get them put on at the last minute anyway so just wait and see what you think will be best.

What didn't you like about the Shellac? I was a biter also or when my nails were all the same legnth one would break. I started getting the shellac on them and they are the strongest they have ever been. I don't go every 2 weeks though. To keep it on longer I get the pink color you would use in a French manicure and once my nails grew I just painted over the shellac. Nobody could tell and my nails stayed hard and haven't broke. Good luck with your choice.

  • I would recommend the Gel or Shellac nails. It is not a fake nail, but rather a gel-like polish that goes right on your natural nail and cures under UV light. It is completely dry immediately and it stays chip-free for almost 2 weeks. I get gels every two weeks and have for 2 years now, so I speak from experience. And if you get them the day or two before the wedding, they should definitely be chip-free for the wedding and through your HM. To get the gel off when you want to, use Acetone.

  • I would definitely get the fake nails!  If something happens and a nail chipped or broke, I'd lose my mind!  I know you'll look gorgeous!

  • I voted no, but I think this is more personal. I hate how fake nails damage my nails. Right before we got engaged I was having a terrible time with my nails breaking and just being weak. I actually read a post a while back about a nail strengthening cream that you put on a few times a day (or whatever works for you), and I absolutely love it! Its "Hoof" brand, hard as hoof nail strengthening cream.

Shellac doesnt work for me because I work in health care and I am always washing my hands, so it starts chipping a week in.
