Opening Song?

Hi everyone --

I'm drawing a blank. We're having a full Catholic wedding with a Mass. Obviously the wedding party and myself will process in to a particular song. However, are we still supposed to have an opening hymn for the congregation to sing? I can't remember!

That is an option....depending on your processional music. If your processional song is a hymn that people sing to (which happens very rarely, but it does happen), there is no need for a gathering song.

If you choose the traditional classical or ballad type song for procession, then you can consider having a gathering song. I find it helps people start participating in the mass rather than just watching it as a show.

A few priests actually require the gathering song.

You can, but you don't have to. We didn't. I don't think I've ever seen a separate opening hymn sung at a Catholic wedding.

We are doing a Mother's Entrance song and 2 for the Attendant's. For the Mother's it is the Flower Duet from Lakme and for the Attendant's we are doing Canon in D by Pachelbel and then Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring by Bach.

We used a hymn as our processional, actually, so there was no need for a separate opening hymn.

I think we are going to do an instrumental song for the procession, then sing a couple verses of a hymn for a gathering song.  I have a favorite hymn that I wanted to include and I think it is a good way to start the mass off with everyone participating, rather than just observing.

We are having the BP processional, bridal processional, and then the opening hymn
