Anyone had a non-denominational Pagan service?

Looking for ideas if you had a pagan ceremony.

A bit about me, I'm a non denominational Pagan/Earth spirtualist, with a tendency towards Ancient Roman worship. He's a lapsed Catholic, with Jewish traditions we might work in.

I'm thinking about having a hand fasting a few weeks before our Reception. Possibly 2 Ceremonies, 1 handfasting in the woods, and another by a interfaith minister before the Reception.

What do you guys think?

  • I would try posting this on the Interfaith Wedding board, they might have some more insight for you. It's listed under Cultural Wedding on the left side.
  • Isn't Pagan a religion?

  • My fiancee and I are planning on incorporating a handfasting ceremony into the wedding, but non-denominational because neither of us are pagan. We like the symbolism and it's a nod to our Celtic heritage. We also plan on incorporating some Jewish traditions like the breaking of the glass, to nod to my Jewish heritage. We're having the ceremony done by a Unitarian-Universalist minister (as I was raised as a UU), and tghey are generally open to mixing traditions. I would say nix the idea of two ceremonies and just do one, unless there is some reason not to (like family not liking the idea of incorporating pagan idea), if it's possible. I think it would probably become a very lovely ceremony, and make it all the more personalized!

  • I have attended a few Pagen wedding services and the portion of the service I liked was when the bride and groom jumped over the broom, signifying their entry into married life. (It's been a while, so I'm not entirely sure about this.)  I also thought the burning of the sage smudge was especially symbolic of leaving behind the past and embracing the future.

I do have a Christian background, but found these rituals to be very beautiful and meaningful.

    Good luck!
  • I am pagan as well. We are doing a handfasting ceremony mixed with a bit of christain tradition. Our ceremony will be a mixture of a few different traditions, handfasting, sage, sand (possibly) and a few others. Just do one ceremony and combine your lives together in one "new" and personalized way.
  • HI guys, this is the OP.

I'm practice (rather loosely) a form of Roman neopaganism, based on the principles encouraged by a few Roman Recreation groups, like NovaRoma.org.

I decided a few years ago that I'd like to have a personal ceremony that incorprates some general Pagan symbolism including a handfasting and some more Ancient Roman wedding ideas. Mostly, this would be for the hubby and I, along with the priest or priestess and possibly some close friends.

My family doesn't exactly know about my pagan beliefs nor does his family, so I'd rather it not become an issue. As a result, there will be a 2nd family ceremony before the reception. This one will be non denomination, possibly UU based.

That way, we have a personal ceremony that means a lot (at least to me and my faith) and a moment for the entire kith and kin to appreciate as well. :)

    Hope this explanation helps!
