Bustling

Hey everyone! I found and ordered my dress Saturday! It has a bit of a longer train than I was looking for and I was thinking about bustling it for the entire wedding (pictures, ceremony, and reception). It's an outdoor, somewhat casual wedding and I'd rather not have to have someone fluff my dress every time I turn around.

Has anyone done this and do you think I would miss it on the one day of my life where it's acceptable to have a train?

Re: Bustling

  • I would definitely recommend bustling. We are having an outdoor wedding as well and will only have the train out for the ceremony. I don't want anyone tripping over it or tearing it up. My seamstress only charged $80 to bustle and hem my dress. And when it's bustled, it can still be just as beautiful :)

  • Just read you wanted to for the whole thing... I think you should let it out for the ceremony and pictures :)

  • If you really don't want the train, why not ask the seamstress to remove it entirely?  It will make your dress lighter and easier to walk in than having it bustled all day.
  • It's super expensive to remove the train entirely. It's not a very long train, just enough that I know I would be annoyed with it walking around taking pictures. So it shouldn't be a heavy or bulky bustle.

Why not keep the train for the ceremony and some initial photos and then bustle it for the reception?  That is quite common to do.   I've never seen anyone bustle it for the ceremony and would find it quite strange if they did......that is usually a very pretty part of the dress.
  • My dress was fluffed exactly twice before I bustled it.  Once during pictures before the ceremony then when I walked down the aisle.  My sister straightened it a bit while I was standing there, but I'm not sure that counts.  The photographer also straightened it some for pictures, but it wasn't a big to-do.

The rest of the time?  I picked it up and walked with it.  Very elegant, I tell ya.

I did bustle for the reception and I thought it was a nice balance.  I'd definitely leave the train out for the ceremony and then bustle for the reception.
  • i agree with others.  leave it down for the ceremony, and 1-2 photos.  then you can bustle it for the rest of the night. =)
  • Um, my dress wasn't fluffed once during the entire day.  My sister/MOH helped to carry my train as I walked to the ceremony area and layed my train out.  That was the last time it was "fluffed" so to speak.

After pictures I bustled it so I wouldn't have to drag it around with me all night.

  • Ok, there seems to be a consensus. So how long does it take to bustle the dress?

It depends on how elaborate your bustle is but mine was a two point bustle.  It had two buttons and two elastic hoops attached to the train/dress.  My MOH found the two hooks (she knew where they were before hand as well as the buttons) and looped each one around the buttons.  It took her about 30 seconds.

If you don't want something time consuming then go with a very simple buslte.  If you go elaborate with lots of hooks and eyes and such then it may take a bit longer but shouldn't take much longer then 10 minutes tops.
