July 2012 Weddings

Just a vent regarding my Italian church wedding...

I have to get it off my chest.  These things would never happen in New York (or the US in general I guess)

So regarding church:  Maybe some of you remember when I said in the catholic wedding post that our priest said he plans on being dead in September?  Well, he said it again.  He's very adamant that he is going to die and is insistent that we find another priest to marry us.  Because my (dumb) FI didn't want to get married in his own parish and had his heart set on this particular church I feel we are screwed.  We already but the deposit on restaurant, are already getting our invitations made, my photographer is coming here from England and has already booked his flight and I have another good friend who's booked his flight , too.  Changing the date and going to FI's parish isn't an option at this point.

So I have to get a priest somehow.  Fi's parish priest has a wedding that day.  My FI says not to worry.  In NY, I would have my priest and my church without any problem.

Regarding flowers or any other kind of vendors:  No contracts, no deposits, no proposals.  I went to see a florist yesterday.  She seemed very familiar with the church and I told her I want to keep things white and simple (really want complete opposite from NY wedding).  She had no pictures to show me to give me an idea.  She had one of those gardening pamphlets that shows different flowers and said this is what's available in september.  Come back in August and you'll see what's available.  So basically, I can go see her in august if I choose to book her.  I asked the hairdresser if he wanted a deposit and no.  My wedding favor and invitation person, her neither.  I feel like they don't give you a contract so they can take on another job if something better comes along.   This is the reason I opted for an American photographer living in England.  He gave me a contract and I paid him a deposit.

Ugh, you girls are so lucky.  You'll have gotten this over with by JUly...I have to keep going til september.

  • I haven't changed my date.  I'm still a July 2012 Bride (the best kind there is!).  We're doing our civil ceremony in July in NY and our church ceremony here in italy (because FI wanted a piece of the pie too!  He thinks the wedding in NY is more about me).  And so I have double the headache to deal with, cause god knows in the end it's been me finding the vendors and calling and making appts, etc.  Only thing he did was choose this pain in the ass church (sorry god!) :(  Yeah, I really hope he doesn't die.

I swear these 3rd world countries.  I'm sorry you're going through this, too.  I would be completely freaking out if I were you : ( But I'm sure everything will work out in the end for you and you'll have a great and beautiful day!

I saw in another post about your search for a hairdresser.  What part are you in?  If you say guayaquil or quito maybe I can get you a few names.  I have (ecuadorian-american)friends who go to Ecuador quite often so you never know, maybe one of them can suggest someone.

  • Oh man that's quite a handful!! Sorry Nancy : My mom and several other family members want me to do the same thing, go back home and have a second wedding. Or at least a celebration party. I'm not really up for it though, too much work lol!! And that's a lot of people to invite meaning no matter how simple it is, it won't be cheap. I'm in Quito actually so that's great! If anyone knows of a good place that would be awesome! Thanks!! :
  • You know what's weird is I had this dream vision of getting married in Italy, so I am TOTALLY jealous of you, but now that I'm hearing all of these issues, I'm SO glad we're just doing it here in the States! Sounds like a massive headache :(

  • Actually, as a foreigner I don't think it would be that difficult which is the funny thing about it.  Your wedding planner would do everything (and you'd definitely need one for a DW here) and you wouldn't have any problem with the priest because they wouldn't expect you to have a parish priest.  I hear that germans get married at out church all the time.  Italy is so je ne sai quoi.  I'm over it!!

  • Have we already discussed where you are in Italy? I've been all over the place in Italy, but not in the South - we were engaged on Lake Como in Bellagio!

  • I live in Verona.   God only knows what I'd be going through if I lived in the south, haha.  How lovely that you were engaged on Lake Como!  With all the beautiful places to propose to someone in italy,  my FI chose our bedroom!

YES YES YES! So very true!! A 100% DW changes things completely and is wayyy less hectic than actually living there and planning it your damn self. Grr

And Nancy that's very funny about your FI's proposal lol! Oh life!
