Embracing summer and keeping it elegant - how?

Hi everyone, I'm Chrissy. My fiance and I are getting married on June 21st of 2013. It's the first day of summer and I would really like to incorporate summer into the wedding - but also keep it very elegant and classic. Our colors are purple and white, trying to keep the flowers soft and romantic. I'm thinking of maybe having big daisies or tulips as the main flowers in the bouquets/centerpieces, with peonies for mine. The only "summer-y" thing we have right now is having a boardwalk dessert table w/ fried oreos, funnel cake, etc.

What could we do to really play of the first day of sumer? Maybe different flower choices? Cute favors or centerpiece ideas, or other decor? I'd love to hear ideas from everyone else on how you're planning to incorporate summer into the wedding, other than it being June. :)

Re: Embracing summer and keeping it elegant - how?

  • Well, summer means different things to everyone.. and it doesn't often fall into "elegant and classy."  For me, summer is cookouts, fun fruity cocktails (you could do), crabbing season/boating/swimming in the bay, farm fair or state fair, and beach time of course.  I like the dessert table because it sort of ties in the fair food.  I think a cute touch is an iced tea and lemonade table, im thinking of one Ive seen on pinterest with these pretty glass dispensers with lemonade and iced tea.  UMMM, I guess the obvious thing to do is play up the sun, your day is the longest day of the year so if you are outdoors, give them sunscreen, sunglasses for fun...  But again, anything I can come up with doesn't sound "elegant and classy" it reminds me of a fun summer party.

In our case, we wanted things to be quite informal, we will have yard games, my favorite flower is the sunflower so they will be everywhere, it's going to be much like a summer picnic.

  • I agree with the PPs. Summer means different things to many people. I think your color choices are fine. I think it is hard to do a classy elegent wedding if you absolutely want to tie in the summer theme. I think you did a good job of it by your dessert table. If you are having an outdoor wedding, instead of printing out plain boring programs, you could make them into fans, thats what I am planning on doing.Thats my only idea right now! Congrats and welcome to the board! you are getting married the day before me :)

  • Love the dessert table idea! Is your reception outdoors? My BFF will be getting married next fall and they plan to have all sorts of outdoor games set up! That would be fun especially since like PP said, you'll be married on the longest day of the year!

  • I've seen a lot of really cute decorations where they used DIY paper pinwheels. They don't look that complicated, and you could do them with pretty patterned paper that matches your wedding colors (which would make them more elegant). I think something like this would kind of be "summery" without overdoing it.

Also, like Ash said, the iced tea and lemonade in the big glass dispensers are a nice touch. We're actually doing a table of three of these containers with lemondade, iced tea, and iced water for guests to help themselves before the ceremony (we're getting married outside, the day after you!!).
