Trying to Loose Weight and Sick with Infection

Hi-

Anyone have any tips for maintaining weight when you are sick and can't work out?  I have a really bad ear and sinus infection and have been unable to work out all week.   I am drinking plenty of water, keeping meals light and healthy, but wonder if you have any other tips.  Thanks!

Jen

  • Hi,

My only suggestion would be to eat at maintenance.

Oh no, feel better! I was sick this week, so I know where you're coming from.
A few things I know I enjoyed this week: quinoa, all natural apple sauce, progresso low sodium soups, a guilty night of Mac and cheese, a ton of Greek yogurt, oranges, lean beef, and oatmeal.

A few things I think are key:
-make sure to eat regularly.  I made sure to at least have a snack every three hours or so, to keep my metabolism going.
-hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Water and tea are best
-give your body plenty of rest
-the same foods that can help maintain a healthy weight are often times the ones that are best for your body when sick. Lots of protein, fruits and veggies, whole grains, and low sodium soups, for example
-track your calories-this will help with how much you should be eating for your current activity level

Remember that weight loss and maintenance is mostly done in the kitchen, so that eating the right foods will help you on the right track while you can't workout.

I hope you feel better soon!

  • Another suggestion: If you're feeling up to it, move around - go for a short walk. Even a little bit of activity (it doesn't have to be heavy cardio) is better than none.

I was sick last week and used my exercise bike at the lowest settings...I wasn't sweating or burning many calories but I felt better getting any kind of movement in.
