DIY makeup

I am currently planning to do my own hair and makeup, although I am open to having either or both of them done, especially hair. On a normal day, I only wear eyeliner, eyeshadow, and mascara (no foundation or anything). I seem to gather that that won't cut it for my wedding. I am having a noon wedding, so the morning will be busy, and if I can figure out what I need to do my own makeup, that would be helpful. I am still over 10 months out, so plenty of time to practice. What makeup do I need to wear? Primer, foundation, etc? Any recommendations for brands?

Re: DIY makeup

  • Your best bet, since you don't have a lot of experience, is probably to go to a department store, or my personal favorite, Sephora, and get a consultation done. I know for Sephora you have to buy a $50 gift card if you want a full makeup consultation done, but you can get your makeup done for the day, which is what I did for engagement pics.
  • I agree with cwaggoner, if you don't typically wear a full face of makeup I might consider just hiring someone. A lot can go into bridal makeup and to use good quaility products you're going to spend at least $150 on everything anyways with the primers, foundation, concealer, powder, eyeshadows, liners, blush, lip liners, lipsticks, finishing spray, lashes, etc.
I may be biased because I am a MUA and do weddings haha but I definitely think that for certain people DIY can work because they use pro stuff regularly and know how to accentuate their features. But IF you were ever to get your makeup done, your wedding day is definitely the day to do it. It's certainly a time you're going to want to be pampered and relaxed and not have to stress and worry about things applying properly. I am even having my makeup done for my wedding for that reason...and because it's super hard to apply lashes to yourself as well as you can to another person considering you can't completely close your eye when doing it, especially with the pressure and stress going on.

  • I'm getting married in a rural area and I haven't found anyone that I *love* that I'd be willing to spend the travel money on(or thats willing to travel so far), my plan is to go to MAC and get a consultation, it's $50 like Sephora. Just to get tips and recommendations. =)

  • Or visit the Clinique counter - since you don't wear foundation normally, they have very light foundation that stays on all day.  They also sell a nice tinted moisturizer which may be enough if you have flawless skin.  I don't think you have to pay anything, just try to visit on a quiet day - not a Fri, Sat or Sunday.
Also, I love Maybellines gel eyeliner - it comes in a small cup like container w/ a applicator - it is WATERPROOF :)  All the big name brands carry eyeliner like this, but I must say I really like this one better than the Sephora (more $ one) brand.
