Draping people

Hi girls,

Would any of you know where I can find a draping person? Raangoli, I appreciate the contact you gave me but she is booked for my day : (

Let me know if any of you girls in the NY/NJ area know people.

Thanks!!

Can the person who is already booked recommend someone she may know?

She isn't indian so I don't think she would know draping people : (

Is your photographer desi, maybe they can suggest someone? Or even your DJ if they are desi. What I learned is that all the vendors know everyone and each other...

Another option is to find a makeup/hair person to help with that.  I know the one that I am going to book also helps with draping.

If you get down to the wire, I had one of my good friends do that for me and my family :)  She didn't mind at all, and really wanted to help out :) So it worked out... and she got some fab pictures as well before everyone else :)

Yeah, I may have to resort to that. Because the indian makeup artists who drape won't just do draping, they want to do hair and makeup as well. I may just have to resort to my friends. I wouldn't mind the draping as much, it is just the dupatta on my head that I am worried about because it is soo heavy

Another suggestion that I got from my make up/hair lady, if you do have one of your friends help with the dupatta, you can pin the dupatta on your shoulder (as inconspicuous as possible) as well as half-way down your back so that it gives it some support. :)

    From an old post, http://muslim.weddings.com/Sites/weddings/Pages/main.aspx/cultural-wedding-boards_south-asian-weddings_pinning-heavy-dupatta?MsdVisit=1

Pinning a heavy dupatta to your head....

I've read as well that you can put safety pins with hardly any visibility pinning it behind your ears, and pinning it to your shoulders...

They pinned my dupatta 3 times (besides hairpins at the top of the head).  One safety pin was on my right shoulder.  This held the dupatta in place around the head and also made it fall in a flattering manner around the face.  I had it draped to the front (like this), and they pinned the pleats so they stayed put.  The 3rd pin kept the dupatta in place across my chest (around my left shoulder-breast area.

I also had to drape my own sari twice (yikes!) because my ILs live in a village with no salon.  It can be done!  Just give yourself plenty of time so you don't get into a sweating panic like I did lol.  (practice helps too!)

    Wow temurlang!  Very good advice!

Also, my mom has a sari pleater, that also does pleats for the dupatta if you need it to...  I tried it because I was skeptical, and it did seem to work :)

    http://www.amazon.com/Sari-Saheli-The-Pleat-Maker/dp/B0044V5ISA $25.00

http://sarisaheli.com/collections/all $24.95 (not sure about shipping) <-- this comes with instructions, and there are links to youtube videos to see what they are doing...

OMG!  KP that's great!  Does it work on all fabric types?  I find the heavier silk saris like you wear for weddings a bit easier.  I had to wear a georgette one (the typical newly-married Rajasthani type), and it was so slippery and hard to pleat, but the one in the video seems like a similar material.  I also have a hard time with cotton.

MIL only wears a sari, and she couldn't understand why I needed to pin it lol!  2 years ago my ILs went to NYC in the winter so DH bought her jeans.  Then he realized she didn't own any shirts!

A sari pleater? Quite interesting... maybe I should order one.

Oh, and on the subject of draping....

I have found a new dentist! What does that have to so with sari draping...? She's Marathi and very into my wedding details. When I have my blouses & petticoats stitched, she wants me to bring them in, and she will help teach me how to drape them!! FI is kinda worried about going to his appointment with her in a few weeks... worried about it being a "hen house", lol!

Temurlang..... your poor husband... not thinking about the fact his mom has no shirts, haha! Sounds like something FI would do.

So I tried this on a few different fabrics - there are magnet clips that come with this sari pleater, and you can keep both ends in place, and if you really want to leave on the clip underneath :-)  It helps for fabrics like chiffon and georgette that don't wrinkle as easily as some of the other materials...  I also tried it on a fully embroidered/sequenced sari, with very good results  as well :)
