Wedding Ceremony & Reception Music Discussions

Suddenly overwhelmed...

I'm suddenly feeling overwhelmed and lost when thinking about music. Originally, we weren't going to have any ceremony music (getting married outside, next to a river, just going with the sounds of nature) and there won't really be any dancing at the reception (aside from our first dance, father/daughter, mother/son) and just filler music during the reception. FI and I have narrowed down a list of songs for us, he's working on selections with his mother, and I'm working on a list with my dad...my stressed-ness is coming from the ceremony.

So we're kinda leaning towards the possibility of a harpist (has a list of selections) or our DJ also doing the ceremony. If our DJ does the ceremony, I need to decide on music. I'm completely lost at where to begin and how long songs need to be or if he can fade them, what goes good together, etc. I really like "Turning Page" by Sleeping at Last (Breaking Dawn...found it on the forum) but am not sure what to play for bridal party and family entrances.

Am I freaking out prematurely?? Am I making it more complicated than it needs to be? Help!

well, first off, calm down. I see why you're stressed, but that never helps anyone. Your DJ can offer suggestions, if that's the solution you are going with. I am also having an outdoor wedding and we're going to go with a violinist. So, I personally like the idea of a harpist by the river. If you're looking into that, she/he more than likely has a list of songs they know how to play and you choose from her repertoire. vendors can be more than helpful if you ask them for ideas and suggestions. Ask your FI if he has any preferences, maybe there's a tune he'd like to hear. Also, because you're near a river, have you ever heard Air from Handel's Water Suite in F major? I find that it complements an outdoor ceremony very well, especially if there is water nearby.

  • Relax!  I have played the harp at many, many outside weddings.  Take a look at my website:  www.freewebs.com/celtic-harpist. One song that I am really recommending is River Flows in You.  Very pretty!  Let me know if you have any other questions.  Too bad Colorado and TN are so far apart!  Good luck!
