Indicate open bar on invite?

I've noticed on a few other boards that ladies are saying open bars are not the norm in certain areas of the country, such as MN. I don't think that's the case in Chicagoland but just thought I'd ask whether you ladies think it is appropriate to indicate there is an open bar on the invitation. Vote below. Thanks!

Re: Indicate open bar on invite?

  • Even if it weren't the standard, I wouldn't indicate it on the invite. If you have a wedding website you might put it in the details about the reception if you want to, but it's not really necessary. Whatever you are able to host, whether a wine and beer only selection, or a full open bar, is up to you as the host of the wedding. It shouldn't matter to the guests.

I voted for the first option, as I've never been to a wedding in the Chicago area that was a cash bar.  If you elect to have a cash bar, you shouldn't put it on the invitation or any other place for that matter, in my opinion.

  • Thank you for your insight! I find it interesting that in Milwaukee and Minneapolis areas, it seems to be more common to have a cash bar.
  • I said other. Regardless of where the wedding is, I would suggest you do not mention anything about the bar.
  • I agree with runs.

I would simply have signs at the bar saying what you are hosting, whether it's wine, beer, and soft drinks, or "Help yourself to a drink from the bride and groom".
  • I htink it would be a bit tacky to put that on the invitation.  We are not having a traditional wedding so we made a wedding website where we could tell the guests all about the other info for the day that wasn't included in the invite.  (Bar included!)
