San Antonio???? ideas?

Coming out of lurk mode for a question.

FI and I finally (stress that finally) decided on a location for our honeymoon. We are going to San Antonio Texas. I saw it featured on foodtv with Rachael Ray's vacations and I found it an original destination. No one up here in New England would ever think to go to Texas, nor a city for a honeymoon.

So we have a small plan of what we want to do. We are going to Sea World and going behind the scenes (yup paying a little extra to get up close and personal.) Then we have a few select eating places we want to try and hit.

So what I need from you.... Have you ever been and what would you recommend for interesting things. Interesting from romantic to goofy.

We are also debating renting a car and driving over to Corpus Christi for a day; also not sure what is over there to do. I just want to be at the ocean for a day.

So any ideas/help would be beyond appreciated. :) Thank you!

  • Although i know there are few Texas brides on this board i would strongly recommend you post on the local board (if you haven't yet).

  • I would stay on the Riverwalk if I were you.  There are many chain hotels and boutique hotels.  It's such a fun area to be with TONS of restaurants (mostly Texas bbq and Mexican, but there are a few other choices as well).  You can walk to touristy things from there like the Alamo and Ripley's Believe it or Not museum.  They also have boat rides on the Riverwalk (not romantic since you're with quite a few other people, but if you take one at night, it's beautiful)

  • I've been really considering going to San Antonio too !FI is a BIG Spurs fan and his dream is to go a game there..so I'm thinking maybe one or two days there and the rest of the week in the bahamas..if I can get tickets to a game that will be his wedding gift/partial honeymoon (our date got change from 07/07/12 to 10/12/13) our wedding will be in the fall so I think it will be perfect for the time of year and plus it will be nba season..I just hope there is a game there during the week of the honeymoon ! Now, my mom went there and said it was beautiful, great aunthenic mexican food and it was lots to do ! I say go for it..I'm sure going to try !!

  • Thank you, I will go post this over there for more help. :)

I have a few hotels we are looking at and I want very much to stay on the River Walk. We haven't booked yet as waiting for tax returns to come in. ;)

I wasn't aware there was a Ripley's... Oh I think FI would dig that. Thank you for that suggestion.

  • Oh if you like steak go to Texas Land and Cattle, its right on the Riverwalk and everything is slow cooked for 14 hours.  I dream about this place!!!  :)  When I was ont hte Riverwalk a few years ago there was an awesome dueling piano bar.  We had a great time, and I hope it is still there.

I've been to Corpus Christi, and it did not seem like a vacation town.  I think you might be better off considering Port Aransas.  Corpus Christi only has beaches on the bay, and PA is on the gulf itself.  The water is supposed to be much nicer in PA.

    Have fun!

  • Living in Austin and being a born and raised Texan, i've frequented San Antonio many times and always have a blast.

Everyone is right, the Riverwalk is really the main attraction of San Antonio. If y'all can stay there, it will put you right by all the shops and restaurants and the Alamo. Ripley's Believe it or Not is a lot of fun, something different for you and FI to go to. They also have a mirror maze right down the street that is fun. The Alamo is interesting, and free for everyone to walk around. Natural Bridge Caverns isn't far, just a little north of SA.

I LOVE Sea World. They also have a water park there, so bring a swim suit if you are interested. Might be nice to cool off at, Texas in July is pretty hot. There's also Fiesta Texas (Six Flags).

Also been to Corpus Christi a few times. They have some ok beaches. There's also an aquarium there, but other than that not much to do besides go to the beach. That's always been a weekend trip for us. Never been to Port A, but like janeneo said, it's on the gulf so the water will be better.
