Silver Bay Ladies

Hey,

I am so excited, we booked silver bay ymca today for Oct 1, 2011!
Here is my question-  we've got people coming from ALL over the place and a handful of them have expressed interest in staying off campus (not staying at the ymca camp).  Also- if you were/are getting married here you know you need to put down 20% of the cost of any rooms you hold for your wedding guests so we are only holding rooms for family we know will stay.

I'm having a hard time finding a hotel big enough to accomodate everyone.  I know normally couples will block off rooms at a hotel for thier guests... but I'm at a loss...  What did/are you doing?

Any suggestions?  Also- does your hotel have a shuttle?  Are you renting one?

Thanks for your help!

We got married there in October 2009.  Some of our guests stayed at the Adirondack Park Motel (technically in Bolton Landing, but it is actually much closer to SB that most BL motels.  I would say that they thought the rooms were your typical Adirondack style motel.  The Sagamore is a more upscale accommodation in Bolton Landing.  There is the Best Western in Ticonderoga which seems nice and isn't too far.  I looked into doing a block of rooms there but my guests preferred to be closer (that's why a lot of them stayed in Bolton Landing.

About half of our guests stayed in the Inn at Silver Bay.  We just had them hold a block of rooms and our guests called to reserve.  The guests had up to about 10 weeks before the wedding to call.  We were not subject to a 20% deposit - that must be something new.  The one reason that a lot of our guests didn't want to stay there is because they charge extra for the membership fee and our guests were not there to participate in SB activities - they were there for the wedding.  So I didn't really like that part.  I can understand that some of your guests would prefer to stay off campus.

To be honest, it seems like a lot has changed since our wedding.  I priced out our wedding and it would cost us about $4000 more now to get married there than it did last year.  I don't know what happened, but it seems that everything has gone up in price.

But you will love it there.  Good luck with your planning!

We're getting married there in a few weeks. We didn't block rooms because we were told if we blocked them and they didn't get rented we would be responsible for paying for the rooms. No thanks.  Plus, as Lisa said, guests are required to pay the activity fee regardless of whether or not they utilize any of the things the campus has to offer. Again, no. And finally, there is no internet access, television, or even telephone, and cell phones do not do well in that area. Most of our guests would not be excited about that.

We used one of our invitation inserts to suggest that any guests who needed hotel acccomodations contact us directly so that we could advise them of which hotels in the area were best suited to them....ie family friendly, or with specific amenities, or close to certain attractions they might be interested in. It just worked better for us. To answer your other question, I can't think of a hotel in the area that would offer shuttle service, especially that time of year. Lake George, particularly northern Lake George, is dying down that time of year. If you do find one, I'd love to hear about it for our guests!
