Formal engagement party???

My fiancees father is throwing us a formal sit down dinner party in a catering hall. I have NEVER been to an engagement party, so I have no idea what is done at one of these things. Should a DJ be hired? Are there any formal announcements? Are you supposed to introduce the bridal party to the guests? I'm soooo confused.

Your fiance's father (one e for guys) is throwing the party, so it's his decision whether or not to hire a DJ.  You can send engagement announcements if you want.  If you're not getting married until January 2014 it's too early for you to have a wedding party picked out, but in case you do anyway you can announce them there if you want.  Basically an engagement party is just a meet and greet for the families to mingle.  Don't overthink it, and leave the details up to the host.
