King's table?

So we've decided to have a king's table instead of having a head table/sweetheart table.  Basically, it allows for you to still sit with your bridal party without separating the bridal party from their dates - two tables are pushed together, and the bride and groom sit at the head:
Maybe I am overthinking this - but do couple sit next to each other, or across from each other?

Re: King's table?

  • If it's two tables, I would say they sit next to each other so they don't have to yell across the tables.
  • I love that idea! I really wanted to do family-style seating, but the reception space just isn't long/big enough. But I love the King's table idea. I would have the WP and their dates sit next to each other. I think it would be fine to split the WP up along the table to do so.
  • We're doing the exact same thing.  I agree with PPs, I would have the WP sit next to their dates.
  • Next to them I think across would be a little awkward and hard for them to talk. I think PP said it all.
  • Ok, thanks guys - that was what I was thinking, too.

We're doing something like this as well and I had the same question! I'm hoping to be able to see that actual size of the table next week so I can decide. I think I would also be in the seat them next to eachother camp, however at least two of our groomsmen and one our bridesmaids may not have dates, so I'm not sure how to work all that, heh.
  • I wouldn't worry about it...some of our WP members won't have dates, either!

  • I saw this posted online and absolutely love the idea! I don't know if it would work in our venue but I will definitely be looking into it. I also agree that the WP members and their dates should sit next to each other.

Here is a picture of this at my venue (they call it an estate table, not a king's table, but I am assuming it is the same thing).  I love the look of the rectangular table with the round tables.
  • I wish I could do this, but all of FI's groomsmen are married and there's about 8 kids between them. I don't think there's a way to do this without it looking ridiculous lol.
