Reception - Who to tip?

We are holding a wedding reception almost 2 years after we got married. We did the courthouse marriage in hopes we'd be able to save up for a wedding at a later date.

So two years later, we're planning for a reception. My husband and I were discussing tipping last night and neither of us knew who exactly we should tip.

The following are involved in the reception:

-Caterer, who arranges booking of the hall as well
-DJ
-Photo Booth operator
-Bartenders (who get paid on the catering bill)

Anyone have suggestions on if we should tip these people and if so approx how much??

Tip who you think did an exceptional job.

If the catering includes gratuity (check your contract), no need to give them any additional amounts unless you feel as though they did above and beyond your expectations.  Same goes with bartenders if they are included.  Gratuity was included for catering, waitstaff, bartenders.  We gave the bartenders extra because they did a good job.  But we did not give anybody else on the waitstaff extra because gratuity was already included and I thought it was adequate.  If gratuity is not included, you may want to tip something like 15% of your catering + bar bill.

Keep in mind, your guests may elect to optionally tip bartenders, too.

Tip the DJ for sure if he does NOT own the business.  If he does own the business, then tip at your discretion.  We tipped our DJ who did own the business because we thought he did a good job.

Same goes for the phone booth operator, photographer, etc.  Just tip at your discretion.  Whatever you feel their time was worth, an extra $20, $50, $100...

I agree w/above.  If the catering doesn't include a tip you should definitely do that.  For all other services, it is up to you based on the service you receive (or anticipate receiving as you need to be prepared with $$ that night).

We had gratuity included in our bill for the site/food.  I think maybe our bartender had a tip jar, but I only made it to the bar one time so I didn't really pay attention.  I also tipped my DJ (even though he owned the company) but his work was above and beyond what I expected.  I discussed tipping photographer & videographer w/friends & family beforehand and they all thought it was unnecessary (especially in light of what they had already been paid).
