Is it tacky to have someone sing while accompanying himself on the piano at the ceremony?

My voice teacher, who is a wonderful pianist, is doing the music for my wedding ceremony. He's also a classical tenor. I'd love to have him sing as well, but he would have to accompany himself since I don't want to find/hire another pianist (who wouldn't be as good anyway.) My mother and I are in a debate about this - she says it's "untoward" and just not done to have someone accompany themselves for a solo at a wedding. I think it would be fine, as long as I pick an appropriate song and it doesn't sound like a lounge act/piano bar. Is it bad ettiquette, or even just tacky, for him to sing and play?

  • I don't see why it would be a problem if it did sound like a piano bar. As long as the music is good, and non-offensive, you're fine.

Maybe your mom needs a hobby.

Wouldn't it be nice to live together in the kind of world where we belong?
  • I don't really see how this could be tacky.  I mean, unless he sings an inappropriate song, but even then the fact that he is singing and playing piano doesn't make it tacky, the song choice would.

  • I think Ray Charles and Elton John would disagree with your mother. If it sounds neat, clean and professional, by what your saying it sounds like it would then have at it.

  • If it's tacky then I guess the church I work for is tacky.  We only have one person who doubles as both organist and singer for weddings.  Tacky, tacky us.

  • Ditto Mandy above. He's talented in both areas so there's no reason not to use him for both.
  • I for sure don't think so, I get hired to do that all the time.

Well, thanks for backing me up everyone! My mom has her ideas about stuff, but she's cool. We have a very open style of communication. She was actually excited when I  told her I was just gonna go ask the Knot forums about this.... although that might be because she thought you would agree with her. She has heard my musician sing and she loves him... and she seems to be cooler with having him sing during the prelude for some reason, so I think we have a good compromise there. But seriously, if I just went ahead and planned the ceremony and had him sing whatever and whenever I wanted, it's not like she's gonna jump up and tell him to cease and desist. :)

  • I had a friend accompany herself. And it was perfect :)

  • What's the difference? Sounds like a really nice, personal touch to your ceremony. :)
  • That's perfectly fine. Many people prefer to accompany themselves so they don't have to find an accompanist every time they practice or play. We had a signing pianist at cocktail hour and it was very nice.
