Cringeworthy Spelling

Normally I turn a blind eye to misspellings I read on the internet (if I didn't, leetspeak, lolspeak and every other backward evolution of written language would drive me slowly mad), but I'll admit seeing "h'orderves" on another board made me die a little inside.

So what's the worst crime against spelling you've seen around TK?

Ouch, yeah, I'm with you on those ones. Every time I see one of those "just got outta skool and i am soooooo board" Facebook posts, I always wish the poster would get their butt back into the classroom and learn how to spell "school" and "bored".

Same thing as drives me nuts elsewhere - "loose" for "lose"!!!

I want to step in every time and say something, but I do not because I make it a point not to comment on grammar/spelling. I have been on boards a long time, and I find that generally, people who have a lot to say on those things have little of value to say on other topics.

Really, though how has THAT become common usage??

I swear to effing god, plurals are not made with apostrophes.  I literally want to jump through the computer and shake people who do this.
  • RIDICULOUS has no E in it and DEFINITELY has no A in it.

Most mistakes bother me because I find it shows a lack of attention to these things, as though they don't matter. A typo is fine, but writing YOUR instead of YOU'RE throughout a message is just wrong.

    k, my rant is done.
  • I'm probably the only one who is bothered by this, since I see and have to fix it every day in the copy sent to us at work by our stupid sales team, but I hate when people capitalize random words in the middle of a sentence. For example, they'll say something like "I have a big Problem about My Wedding" or "How do I tell a Bridesmaid that she is no longer part of my Wedding Party?" God, that drives me insane.
  • I have a fb friend who uses "where" instead of "were" and always types "elts" instead of "else".  The last one only makes sense if you realize that "elts" is how "else" sounds when it's said in a NC mountain accent, and I think she's just sounding it out.

YES!!!  Where did this come from?  All of sudden, no one can spell ridiculous.  My head wants to explode.

<div>No no, this bothers me too. At a certain points kids go through this period where they capitalize random things (but not the words they should, like city names or 'I').  It is so odd.</div>

I'll excuse kids for doing that, but not grown women. Randomly capitalized words turns on my bitch switch, but I think just because of work. Our sales team loves to capitalize words that should be left lowercase and it takes forever to fix. I had one this morning that said, "*company name* is a Private law firm that practices Family Law, probate, and real estate Law." Come on, people. Seriously?
  • haha Seshat I will do that sometimes when I am typing take a break and start again, or if I am typing to fast for my brain.  BUT then I look at my own text and will fix it. I don't have to have others find it for me.

  • The use of "isle" for aisle makes me cringe.  As does rampant incorrect usage of the words THERE, THEIR or THEY'RE.   And while I am on this roll, any usage of irregardless, anywho, and anyways.

    Mini rant over.

  • Ax instead of ask.

    ezactly instead of exactly.

any of the two/to/too or their/they're/there or your/you're drive me insane.
  • "Defiantly" instead of "definitely".
Random capitalization of Words in a Sentence.
    Grocers' apostrophes.
    two/to/too, they're/their/there, your/you're, etc.

Actually, pretty much everything that everyone else has said :^P
  • i hate it when people put apostrophes in plural words. My mom does it all the time. She says things like I have 3 cat's and my kid's are crazy. There is no apostrophe in these words!!!!
  • Extraneous apostrophes really bug me, too.  I've even seen it on business signs.  There is a coffee shop nearby that has a huge banner that says "Open on Sunday's."

OH GOD.  Just saw this one:

Ah, won't give the right link!  Go to invites and click on the one that spells inserts "incerts"
  • I love this thread. I admit to misspelling sometimes, but there is this fantastic invention called spell check, but it has definitely come in handy! And I also admit that I used to spell 'definitely' wrong all the time, and I learned to spell it correctly through spell check!

I'm going to jump on the their/there/they're bandwagon, along with the its/it's bandwagon.
