Bad Engagement Pictures and Lost Check

We had our engagement pictures done in October and got them shortly after. The photog was not very professional, she just showed up in cheapo shoes and lost her keys and was pretty scatter brained and seemed to be going more for shots for her portfolio than for us. I figured they'd turn out pretty but we got them back and were very disappointed.
That same day practically I got an e-mail from her stating she had lost our check, which we had paid for the pictures up front (bad idea) and tip was included. She lost our check and requested a new one. I said that was strange and didn't want to just 'trust' she had lost our check so I said let's wait and see if it turns up....waited a week or two heard nothing....then she found it. I said great cash it ASAP and it wasn't done so I e-mailed her again (never got a phone number from her...I was referred by a friend via e-mail) and she said she would do so immediately and I asked when because we were out of town and I wanted to make sure so I could have money in the account. She stated whenever we wanted... and I said Friday since we were out of town. It was the day after Thanksgiving and she said that was fine. Then she said Sunday. And now its December and its still not been cashed. Do I have a right to be crazy annoyed? For bad pictures I've been waiting a long time for her to decide she wants my money and we have to transfer the money from our wedding account and she keeps pushing the day back. Now its Monday...
What should I do?  My parents and family all agree the pictures, except for maybe like one or two, are just not good and look awkward...

Re: Bad Engagement Pictures and Lost Check

  • I hope you didn't pay her much.  Honestly I might would tell her she needs to cash it by X date or you are going to put a stop on it.  Did you ever express to her that you weren't happy with the pics?  If so, that might be why she hasn't cashed it.  In that case I wouldn't say anything else about it to her.

After like 30 days or so, I think the bank shouldn't actually still cash the check.

I can't even fathom why you would bring this up. Why does somebody's shoes matter??? It just makes it seem like you are being very petty. If you don't like your pictures cancel your check and let her know. Have you actually seen any of this ladie's previous work? A lot of photographers when you first meet with them show you their work & a lot of them include engagement photos in their package. I'd start talking to her about redoing the pictures.
  • I guess my thing is that when you write a check, you mark it in your checkbook register so that it is deducted from your total and when you look at your balance, that money is already taken out so you don't have to worry about when she cashes it.  She can cash the check whenever she wants, not when you want her to because you have to make sure the money is there, the money should have been there from the moment you wrote the check.  But if you are unhappy with the photos you need to discuss with that her and perhaps schedule a re-shoot or since she has not cashed the check, ask if she'll take some money off and write her a new one.

This! I would be honest and tell her that you are not happy with the pictures. She is a professional that you paid for a service. You are not satisfied with the service so it's your right to tell her that and try to come up with a solution. Hopefully she'll be a decent person and offer to re-shoot.
