baptism

Our youngest daughter is getting baptized on Sunday! :) I need help deciding what is appropriate, since our older daughter's baptism was kind of a blur and bittersweet. What kind of gift do we give the priest? I remember in the parish I grew up in, priests were not allowed to keep cash and it had to be put back in the church. Is that still the same today? If so, what kind of gift should be given? Also is it customary to give the Godparents gifts? If so, any good ideas? I know both the priest and her Godparents will be receiving heartfelt thank you cards, but I fell like something else should be given, but I don't know what to give. Thanks again for all the help!

Re: baptism

  • I'm not sure about the priest.  We gave him a check, but I'm not sure if he got to keep it or if it went back in the church, that's just what everyone does around here.  But I think the Godparents gifts are up to you, whether you want to give them or not.  We just got 2 frames that said "Godmother" and "Godfather" and put a picture of each person holding the baby.  We also found a Godmother and Godfather pendant with a prayer attached to it and gave these as well.

But, when I was the Godmother for my cousin's son, I didn't give a gift, and I didn't expect it, and I wasn't offended not to receive a gift.

  • Priests most definitely should be given a cash/check offering. If you want to do an additional gift, that is up to you.
  • We just gave a check and a nice thank you to the priest. What happens to the money is parish or diocese specific. Unless you know specifically otherwise, I would go with that. If you want to do an additional something, that's up to you.

We didn't give her godfather anything, but it's H's brother/best friend, so I was not too concerned. I really should frame a picture of all of us from the baptism to send him now that I think about it.

  • We always did picture frames for the Godparents.  We never gave the priest a gift.  Maybe times have changed or it just wasn't done here.
