Red Dress, Need Opinions

When my FI asked me to marry him, I knew he'd be involved in all of the wedding plans. Early on he said that he'd love to see me in a red dress (red is my best color and I wear it a lot). I've had the white dress and I agree that red would be stunning.

This morning I asked the online retailer (with a brick and mortar store) about my #1 dress choice. I wanted to know if it could be made in red. Here's the dress I'm talking about: http://www.romanticgowns.com/collection/product-page.asp?SKU=Jessica-P

Now, what I'd like to know from you lovely ladies is that the organza overlays would still be white... the satin red, do you think it would still be a stunning dress or should I consider not making that dress red?

I think red is an awesome color choice!  However it is hard for me to envision that dress red with white organza.  My advice would be find something which can be totally red.  Have you checked out David's Bridal?  They have a lot of good color choices.  (I know how some people feel about them, so I understand if you opted to not visit them)  Whatever you decide though will be perfect, and you my dear will look great!

I can't visualize.......but how about going to somewhere like Nordstroms and look at their party dresses.  My original dress was going to be chocolate brown but I recently took it back.  New dress is green.  Anyway, Nordies has a lovely bridal department and the consultant is not limited to showing you only bridal gowns.  I'm sure any higher end store could help you out.

BTW - the original dress in your post is stunning.

    Congratulations Jennifer,

Another brick and mortar store that I saw several beautiful (and affordable) red wedding dresses on was http://jaysbridal.com they're located in Florida and if you create a log in you can see most of their prices.

The dress that you have selected is gorgeous though but I'm having a hard time picturing it with red satin and white organza.

Please keep us posted with your planning.  I think a red wedding dress is a wonderful idea!!.

My #2 gown comes in red and they have a picture on the website. I love it but wonder if it's too ornate/decorative for an intimate evening chapel wedding.

Oh I like #1 dress far better than #2, but I also can't quite visualize w overlay....
  • edited December 2011
Me too, I think dress #1 is stunning.  Maybe with some ivory accents, and ivory flowers.  I can't visualize what you're saying about the overlays, you mean the drapey layers on the skirt would be white?  Would the red show through underneath?  What about a red top of the dress, and white skirt with white bouquet?

I like dress #1 better, but I'm not sure how it would look with red satin and white overlays.  I do not like dress #2.

IMHO, the 1st dress would not look good with the white overlay.  The second one looks too much like a costume.
Research a bit more - I've seen some really stunning red gowns out there.

Second dress gorgeous but too much for a small intimate wedding.

The crystal organza is a gorgeous fabric, has a shimmery, kind of irridescent look to it.  I think because it has 3 layers it would work.  Go to JoAnn's or another fabric store, find the color of red satin, grab some organza and spread them out and see what you think.  I like the first dress best too.

    Good luck.

    Welcome Jennifer.

I agree with the prior posters, I just can't see the white organza over the red satin. I like the dress though. Teresa's suggestion above is a good one, try out the look at the fabric store.

It's prom season. I'm sure you can find some red dresses that would be appropriate for the size & formality of your occasion. A website I've perused, and I've been to their Michigan location, is this:

www.groupusa.com. They do bridal, bridal party & MOB dresses. Keep looking online, plus consider stores like Nordstrom, Macy's, etc.

You can be a really "red hot bride", and I think it will be great!

Thanks ladies, you've been a good help. FI said he didn't like the idea of making that dress red so if we get it, it'll be white or ivory. We'll be trying dresses on locally in June/July so I just might find my dream dress then.

I won't be buying online before trying it on. This site has a store in Ohio, which is a 10 hour drive for me. We plan on doing that in September if I haven't found a dress yet.

It's hard because I dream of the wedding and I'm wearing my #1 pick in every single one. Could it be THE dress? Sure.

And unfortunately, department stores (Nordstrom's, Macy's) are out for me, none of them exist in my area in Iowa. Most prom dresses are out because they don't make them in my size.

Jennifer I feel you about the size issue.  It is so frustrating to find a store which caries any dresses over a size 14.  Every once and awhile you get one that will have a 16, oh yay!  It was a bit harder for me being a size 24! Good luck with the dress hunt!  Keep your head up, "the one" will find you and you will know.  (At least I did, both times)  Keep us updated!Smile

I think any of those would work, and I LOVE wedding gowns with a bit of color!  Since you're still looking, Maggie Sottero has a couple of gorgeous red gowns, as well.

Most of her gowns go up to a bridal size 28.   A "street size" 18 is a 22 with her gowns, which might give you a little insight as to how they run.

Good luck on whatever gown you decide on and with your dress shopping!  Congratulations.

Wow.  I absolutely LOVE dress #2!!  Love it.
  • edited December 2011
Thanks for the suggestion with MS, I wear a street size 28, so her dresses wouldn't work. I'm hoping to be a 26 by the time I buy my dress. I've been losing weight evenly since February so... who knows.

I like dress #1 better than #2 (too ornate for the setting you've described), like others who have commented, though, I cannot quite envision the overlays in a different color.

Best of luck!  I'm sure you will look beautiful and your guests will *gasp* at your stunning choice.  :)
