Officiant Can't Make the Rehearsal

So I just learned this morning that our Officiant will not be available to attend our rehearsal.  I have to call after work today to discuss the issue, but I'm pretty upset by this - especially since it was a part of our contract (so we paid for them to be there).  Now I guess the new plan is for the guy to arrive early on the wedding day and go over everything with the girls and then everything with the guys separately.  We have a 1pm ceremony, so we are tight on time as it is.  I don't want to squeeze in even more stuff that morning.

Is anyone not doing a rehearsal?  I'm sure our venue coordinator will step in and run us through the walking bits (which is really all there is to rehearse), but still ... it kind of stinks.

Re: Officiant Can't Make the Rehearsal

  • Sorry. :( I hope the venue coordinator can run through it with everyone and have it go smoothly the day of.
  • I would be upset too, especially if you paid for him to be there. Hopefully you will get some clarity once you call him. I am sure your venue coordinator will step up to the plate and everything will run smoothly.

  • I'm sorry Jul, that sucks.  We're not doing a rehearsal.  At the dinner we're going to let everyone know the order of their walking and our venue coordinator takes care of telling everyone what to do and when on the day of.
  • We aren;t doing a rehersal either.  Still doing a dinner the day before that we will go over when people are walking in.

  • Our pastor is not coming to our rehearsal either, he wanted an extra $100 and we don't want to pay that lol.  We're just walking through the ceremony with our bridal party.  I hope you're able to subtract some money off your bill though, since you paid him to come!  I think you'll be fine without him though.

  • Our officiant wanted more $ to do a rehearsal as well (plus travel fees), so we actually opted out. We'll run through a practice run the afternoon before the wedding with whoever is there - it's mostly to see if both my step dad and I will fit down the aisle at the same time.

As for your officiant, you should be getting a refund on whatever fees you paid for him/her to attend the rehearsal. Honestly though, I don't think it's too big of a deal. This person (presumably) does multiple wedding ceremonies per year, so it's unlikely that there's anything about yours that will throw them off. As long as they have your ceremony script with enough time to review, I'm sure they'll do fine. I think the rehearsal is more for the people who aren't in multiple weddings per year, so I wouldn't stress too much about the officiant not being there.

  • The last Catholic wedding I was in, tr church coordinator ran the rehearsal, the priest wasn't even there. I'm not sure if you are having a religious service, but if the venue coordinator is familiar with the service, I think it would be worthwhile to do a rehearsal without the officiant.

  • Aw, I'm sorry!  We decided the other day that our officiant doesn't need to be at our rehearsal. I'm a little nervous, but it should be okay; the entire thing is a "repeat after me" type deal, and not very long to boot.  He pointed out that, especially with a short ceremony, there's not a whole lot of reason to run through it - basically you're getting "fake married" the day before you get "real married."  I am sure all will be fine.  Unless you're planning on having him process  in with the rest of your WP, all he really has to do is stand there and wait for you two to get to the altar.

  • Our officiant told us he could do the rehearsal but with another fee.  So we decided not to do that.  Instead the coordinators at our venue are giving us a run through the evening before the wedding and then we are still doing a traditional rehearsal dinner.

You still have an issue with breach of contract though and you should definitely get a refund!
