Name change

I plan to take my fiance's last name. I also have really considered changing the spelling of my name, my name is kind of uniquely spelled but I want to make it even more unique. I have brought up the idea to a few friends and family some like it some don't. My fiance is not a big fan of me changing my name but is not totally against it. I asked my mom first of course if it would offend her if I changed the spelling of my name, she said of course not because she is amazing.
I like my name I just want to change the spelling.
I need some advice on whether or not I should change it
??

My name is currently spelled Kimberlee, I would like to change it to Kymburleigh. I love unique spelling because what's the point in having a normal name like everyone else? I want to change the spelling of my name because I have never seen this spelling before and Kimberlee (Not the spelling) in general is a pretty common name. It is possible to change your first name also when you get married here, so I wouldn't have to go through all the courts, etc.

Re: Name change

  • Legally changing your name is a huge PITA

  • Are you planning to change the spelling of "Kymburleigh" to something more unique?
  • Usually one can't change a first name on a marriage license. Of course it is state specific (so call the clerk of court/ local attorney). But I think you will have to do a legal name change (file a petition, pay a filing fee, go to a hearing, etc.).

  • As a Kimberly, I find this ridiculous.

Like readhead said, not all states will allow you to change any other part of your name, other than your last name through marriage. Many women want to take their maiden name as their middle name and are upset to find out that they can't do that through marriage. You'd have to do a separate legal name change which is a PITA, and expensive!

Getting married generally only allows you to change your last name (and maybe middle depending on how you want to accomodate dropping/adding your married name).  If you want to legally change your first name, you actually have to go to court to do so and pay whatever the required fees are.

As an aside, I think yuneek spellings of names are dumb, so I would higly advise against it.

I too want to know what your current spelling is and what you want to change it to.
  • I am not a fan of "uneek" name spellings, so I'm going to vote no.

You do realize that changing the spelling to something that sounds exactly the same as the correctly spelled name ensures that you still have a common name and that it is misspelled, yes?

If it is SO important to you to have a unique name, then change your name all together.

You will still have a normal name.  It is still said "Kimberly".  It just makes it harder to spell, and you will have to spell it to literally everyone.  It already is spelled "uniquely".  <div>
</div><div>That is like the woman who named her kid La-a, and pronouncing it Ladasha.  It is complicated, and in almost everyone's mind, ridiculous. </div>

    Hm, I think I like this idea.  It's more unique. <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-wink.gif" border="0" alt="Wink" title="Wink" />
  • My name is Sydney. Just trying to get people to spell that correctly is hard sometimes. (Cidnee apparently jumps to mind for some people). It drives me up the wall when I have to spell my name to people. I don't know why anyone would inflict that on themselves. Waste of time and effort for everyone. The courts are bogged down enough without name changes.
