Canopy Ideas?

Our wedding ceremony will be on a slate terrace.  We'd like to get married under a canopy (ceremony start is 5:30 p.m. in July) to keep us, minister and 2 attendants shaded.

Here's the terrace when set up for a bridal fair:

I've just wrapped floral/decor appts this week (with two vendors) and am not impressed by their canopy offerings for a couple of reasons.  First, prices ($500; $375) seem high given that all but the decorative flowers are reusable.  Second, they don't seem to look like anything special.  Those reasons are inter-coupled, really, b/c if they looked like something special, I'm sure I wouldn't think the prices are too high!  Ha!

Anyhoo ... I'm thinking of going either the DIY (can't believe I'm writing this, the FI and I are SO not DIYers!) or custom route.  I've seen a few resources for DIY canopies.  Do you have any suggestions for custom resources?  Heck, if we have to dish out $500 or more, I may as well get exactly what I want and then re-sell.

FYI ... the canopy below is over the top (no pun intended), way too ornate for us:

I'm eager to hear your opinions.  Thank you, ladies!!

Re: Canopy Ideas?

  • Well, I am a DIY-er, so I guess I'll give you a couple of my thoughts. Not sure how much you want to spend, or how big you want it........

You can get, for lack of a better word, "carport tents" for about $99 online. They are white. They have a peak on them, not flat, but you could get some fabric if you don't like the white plastic, and just use the frame........ plus they are great for parties later in your married life. If you use the white plastic top, then you could drape tulle and flowers around the top or ends, or use Xmas lights.

While the picture you posted is "over the top" for you, what you have shown is similar to a chuppah, which is what Jewish couples use for their weddings. Perhaps you could post on your local board or check the wedding classified board for anyone selling one. You can dress it up or down as you like.

I know the DC area is more expensive than some others for wedding related materials. We are getting full blown 20x30 tent for less than what you posted.

    Good luck.

I know, Sue, the prices are just CRAZY here in DC. That's one of the reasons we decided to move the wedding to Annapolis -- we have a venue, open bar, catering and day-of coordinator there for less than just a space in DC!  Anyhooo ... I've been doing a lot of research since those meetings last week and can definitely do something nice for less than $500 ... or $375.

We're going for something that's not quite a chuppah, not quite a canopy -- not just for aesthetics, but for shade (my fiance is bald and I wear my hair SUPER short, so we will need the cover!  I am happy, though, to have heard from you and 2dBride with very practical alternatives.

I need the extra cash to indulge myself in letterpress invitations, there's just NO WAY I'll drop $500 for the canopy.  Ha!

Thanks so much for your input and support.  I appreciate it.  Cheers!
