Question on a popular name

Payton or Peyton.  How did it get popular and so popular for girls?  I like the name personally and now I know three little girls with that name.  Only Paytons I can think of are Manning, Walter Payton, and Peyton Place.  Peyton Place is SO old I can't think the name sprung from there, but maybe the QB?  but if it's popularity is steeped in football then how come there's not many boys with that name or maybe I just haven't come across them.

Just something that caught my attention when my godson and his wife announced the name of their new baby girl.

Besides, it's boring in here.......anything you need answers to?  The more esoteric the better.

Re: Question on a popular name

  • Names seem to go into and out of fashion for no particular reason.  When we named my son, his name was relatively unusual.  A few years later, it seemed like everyone was giving their sons the same name.  I just figure he'll go through life being thought younger than he is.

I, on the other hand, have a name that was popular in the 1950s, and much less popular after that.  I'm figuring that some day, it will be like Mildred or Maude--no one under 80 will have it.

,,,until the day it becomes hot again and then you'll see all the babies with it! I know a ton of kids who are about 10 now with names that I associate with my grandparents' generation.

I don' t know any Peytons, but I can't think of any really young kids that I know these days so I guess I'm out of the naming loop.
  • My son has a name that was originally a man's name, but has been taken over the girls - Taylor. He gets junk mail for girls sometimes. For a bit he dated a Taylor. Hmm, Taylor and Taylor, now that would be confusing.
  • I have a middle name or an old lady name.  It's not my legal name, but if I changed it now to my legal name, I might be accused of jumping on the popular name bandwagon.  And I have to look at my birth cert to even remember how it's spelled.
  • *waves hand frantically*  Yes, I would like to know the answer to this:  Why do people get married if they're not excited about it?  That is all.

Oh, and on that name thing ... I have a boring name, not popular for babies anymore, but not an old lady name, either.  I named my son after his deceased great uncle ... the lady in the next room gave her kid the same name.  I learned the name was near the top of the popularity list and has since taken a nose dive.  My (new) husband has the same name but uses a popular derivation, not his given name.
  • Dr. Peyton Driscoll was a character on CSI:  NY played by Claire Forlani.

Peyton Elizabeth Sawyer is a character on One Tree Hill played by Hilarie Burton.
  • This is (part) of the reason I named my girls very timeless names: Victoria and Jo Ann. I picked Victoria because in the baby name book it stands for "Victory" which I immediately knew was her name. Jo Ann is named after her father's mother - whom we never see (nor want to) but she goes by JoJo or JLo (her middle name is Lindsay - my mother's maiden name.) Some of these names are obvious of the era the person was born. Here's some names that I think put a person in a specific time: Marsha Brittany Debbie Rose Maude Abby Susan Probably my name - Christine
  • I'm probably older than you JostChristine and the popular names for us were:

    Debbie
    Cathy
Sue (it was always just "Sue")
    Christine or any variation thereof
    Donna
    Patricia, Pat, Patty
    Laura
    Linda
    Denise
