SS Card Name Change

Since the SS office is only open during the week it is not very easy for me to get there to change my name. Has anyone mailed in their application with their birth and marriage certificates to make the change that way? DH and I are a little worried about the documents getting lost and never returned if we mail them in, which would be very bad due to all the sensitive information on them. I'm also curious to know how long it takes to receive the new SS card (and original documents you mailed in) back. Any info is appreciated!

    Hi there!

I mailed in my application because I couldn't get any more time off from work. I mailed it to the New Brunswick office (in case you were wondering). I did mail in my original marriage certificate but I had no problems with it getting lost. If you haven't gotten another copy of your certificate, I would highly suggest doing so because it never hurts to have an extra in case of an emergency.

I think I got a letter from the New Brunswick office stating that my application has been received and I should be getting my new card within the next 2 weeks the same week that I had mailed in my original application. The new card came pretty soon after that.

    Hope that helps!

Does that mean they will make the change if I only send in my marriage certificate? Their website sounds like you need to send in a bunch of different documents to prove your age, identity, citizenship, etc. Maybe I am reading it wrong and can get away with only sending in my marriage certificate without my birth certificate? If that's the case, I'd feel much better.

I didn't send in my birth certificate and didn't have any problems. Maybe I sent in a photocopy of my drivers license but I don't recall sending in any other original docs other than my marriage cert.

I just went today to do it.  I didn't need my birth certificate.  Just marriage license and drivers license.  I know you said it's hard for you to get to, but it was super fast!  I was in and out.
