Now that FI's baker uncle can't make the cake, they're back on my plate. We'll have a big dessert table, which will include cupcakes (one per person) that a friend will make. I'd like to add some pies as well, because I like pie. Question is, do we need a cake on top of that?

Probably not, but I like cakes and I like the idea of my and FI cutting one. If I'd add one to our buffet, do you think that I need to provide one piece for all the guests (about 100)? Or would 50 pieces do, and the rest would take some of the cupcakes/pies/other dessert?

    No cake is necessary...you could get a 6in. Cake for you & fi to cut...set it on a cute cake plate and have the rest of the desserts around it =)I. I am on my phone but google cupcake trees... Love the idea of pies!

    I am having a cake size smaller than my guests mainly because I don't want to have any leftovers between the 2 cakes I'll have, but in your case I think that if you had a small cake for about 50 people that would go right in line with having other small desserts.

    I'd get the smaller cake if you're also having cupcakes and pies. We're doing 5 little mini desserts set out with our cake, and we're only getting the cake for 100, but we're inviting 180.

    The cupcakes are pretty much like cake, right? So why don't you get a smaller cake for you and FI instead of getting a big one??

    this is exactly what i was going to suggest.  get a tiny cake for you guys to cut for the ceremonial cake cutting and for pictures.  then guests can either choose cupcakes or pies as their treat.  no need to get a huge cake when there will be more than enough desserts to go around with the cupcakes and the pies.  if pies are your favorite, i say go for it! it is a cute and unique idea, and i would personally love a piece of pie if i were a guest at a wedding :)

    Absolutely just get a small cake to cut into for the tradition of doing so. If you're thinking you want it now, you'll probably look back and be like "We should have cut a cake." Plenty of bakers will make mini cakes (like, that will feed 10 people at most) and then you can cut into it, have that aspect of it, but then people can eat the cupcakes and other desserts (which will be fun anyway!).

    If you are going to make cake for the guests, you should have enough for everyone, but you can get a tiny cake for you and FI to cut, just don't serve it and take the rest home with you.
