Need ideas for English Garden Party shower

My mother & sister are throwing my shower (customary in my area) and want to do sort of a English garden party theme, since I'm obsessed with England, specifically the monarchy, MOST specifically Kate Middleton.  Anyway, there's obvious ways to make it garden-y, but does anyone have any ideas for how to make it more British?  They've asked me for suggestions but I'm struggling.

I'll be wearing a fascinator & we'll have scones being served, but other than that we don't have much that's related to England.  My mother wanted to do teapots filled with flowers as centerpieces and then give them to the people that win games, but I don't think anyone under 55 would want a teapot like that.  I know I definitely wouldn't and neither would my friends, so we're trying to England it up a bit.  Any suggestions?  TIA!!

Re: Need ideas for English Garden Party shower

  • Have your guests wear hats, like they do in England? You could either ask them to bring hats, or you could go to a thrift shop or something to buy a bunch for cheap. That's about the only thing I can think of! Though I don't know how many guests will be keen on wearing hats...

  • Mini Meat pies?  Sausage Rolls?  Lol all I know is food!  I like the hat idea!!  Lol I asked FI what he thinks of when he thinks of England and he said bad teeth, bad food and bad cricket....he's no help!

If you have space, you could play croquet.

  • Centerpieces involving tea cups? Table names like William, Kate, etc
  • You can have english candy, like jelly babies, Cadbury, maltesers, etc. Hobnob/Digestive cookies. Put little Union Jack flags in the centerpieces. Serve strawberries and cream. Use palace names for the tables. Use roses in the centerpieces.

  • Little sandwiches (cucumber sandwiches?), pastries, tea, etc.

Also decor ideas like PPs with tea cups and table names!

  • Look for double devon cream (or clotted cream) in the fancy dairy section of your grocery store - it'll be imported from England. The kind I've seen is in a little glass jar with a blue label. Serve that along with strawberry jam on your scones - it's the English way to do scones, and super delicious! (It tastes kind of like very thick whipped cream before you've added sugar to it.)

  • One of my friends married a guy from England and at her shower we got little teacups and a tea bag as a favor.  I thought that was a cute idea.  Also, we wore hats and her cake was in the sahpe of a tea kettle.  Albeit, the theme was high tea not "British" per say.   We also played a game where there were British words and American words and we had to match them up.  For example, Flat and apartment go together.  There were some difficult ones but I think the grooms mom and sister came up with those.

  • These are all great ideas! In addition, what if the teapot center pieces were more modern teapots that younger people would actually like? I'm sure over in England these days there are more modern ones.

  • Do they have a big back yard? I think it'd be so much fun to set up the tables out there!

I would use soft/muted pinks, peaches, and greens. As for food, finger sandwiches (like cucumber) would be perfect! Centerpieces with white milkglass-type vases would be gorgeous. Maybe you could also get lots of fine china from your family to mix and match at all the tables.
  • Thanks for all the ideas ladies!  I think we might have to nix the theme actually :(  The shower isn't outside & the place has like set types of food they offer.  I'm sad because I really liked that theme but I just don't think it's going to work.  My family has a tendency to try to do a theme that doesn't really work because of whatever reason & then it just looks inconsistent, and I really don't want a half-theme.  A garden party should really be outside, I don't know why we were trying to do one inside.

I really appreciate all your ideas though!  I'm determined to have an English garden party at some point in my life!!!
