Any recs for a beachfront hotel near San Diego/ La Jolla?

FI and I are trying to finish up the major bookings for our honeymoon.  We're staying in a moderate hotel in LA for 12 nights, but we're spending the last two nights of our trip in the San Diego area, and we want kind of a splurge hotel.

We want to stay near San Diego, La Jolla, or maybe a little further north closer to Dana Point or even Laguna.

We really want something on the beach or as close as possible, and with an ocean view from the room.  There's tons of choices, but some of the real nice resort like places are out of our budget for an ocean view room (Our limit is $1000 after taxes for two nights... a lot of places are turning out to be more than that)

Some of the places we're considering are Hotel Coronado (just a teensy bit out of our budget) or Scripps Inn La Jolla (under-budget, but not a really upscale place).

I've been pouring through trip advisor and other websites... kind of overwhelmed.  It's just a lot of money to throw down on a hotel and want to make sure we're making the best choice possible.

TIA!

  • Or what about the Grand Colonial La Jolla?  Not on the beach, but short walk, great views, and awesome prices.  Anyone stay at any of these places?

  • Do you have AAA? Are you a gov't employee? In case you haven't yet, see what discounts they offer. Also, sometimes if you call, tell them it's your honeymoon, and tell them your budget, they somehow "find" a way to work it out! Good luck!
  • What about somewhere along Mission Bay?  I'm actually visiting San Diego right now and am staying at The Bahia Resort--they also have a sister property called The Catamaran, and it's really quite nice.  They have bayfront rooms with sliding glass doors that look like they lead out onto the sand. I'm sure you could upgrade to something really nice.

Or, for a real splurge, the La Jolla Shores Hotel is right on the water, and really beautiful.
  • Thanks I'll check both of those out!

  • Search the Coronado area. You mentioned the Del Coronado, but for our honeymoon we stayed at Loew's Coronado Bay, which is fabulous.........it's just not right on the beach, you have to walk to get to the beach. But the beach is superb, Silver Sands, named one of the best beaches in the US. Our room had a patio/deck that overlooked the San Diego Bay, and faced west, so we got fabulou sunsets every night. I have a Loew's customer card, and when we checked in on Sunday night, they gave us a substantial upgrade to the suite, which was amazing. We were there in late September, the beginning of off season.

If you stay in the Coronado area, there is a gondola company at the marina next to the Loew's. Link here: http://www.gondolacompany.com/

They have 1 hr sunset rides that were $99, they provide strawberries dipped in chocolate, and you can bring your own bottle of wine or champagne on board, they supply glasses. It was really nice.
  • Thanks!

And the Gondola ride is such a cute idea!  I'll look into that!
