Florida Outdoor Wedding in December

I live in the panhandle of Florida and our wedding is going to be held outside on my parents property on 12/11/10. We are having the ceremony starting at around 1:30/2’ish. We are going to have the reception under a huge pole barn.

While the temperature during the day is usually around the low 70’s or high 60’s, but if the reception runs into 5 or 6pm it can get down into the 50’s for the low. We will rent heaters for the barn and have wall siding up. We have told guests to dress accordingly.

While I am not a wimp when it comes to cold, a lot of my fellow Floridians are. Like right now it is 96 outside with the heat index into the 110 and they are outside sunbathing, but when it get’s to the 60’s they seem like they are suffering with frostbite. While my family are very happy with the cooler weather, I don’t want my wimpy-weather guests complaining or leaving because it is below 70.

  • Being from FL, that's the chance you're taking when having an outdoor wedding in December.  Remind your guests to bring a sweater or coat and have the heaters, that's all you can do.

  • We had an outdoor wedding in FL in Jan. The day of our wedding it was a little windy, but still hot. It was a destination wedding for us and all our guests, so compared to NY where it was snowing, the weather being just below 70 was so warm to us, but very cold to those from FL. It was pretty funny!

  • I'm doing an outdoor Florida wedding in February. After last year's "wicked" winter, I'm a little nervous! I hope that the above poster is right... January being hot! I can only wish!

  • Well I am with you Krystal ours is in April and after last year there is just no telling what the weather will be. But to tell the truth I have been in shorts on Christmas and been hot too. So welcome to the Panhandle you just never know! But the heaters will help and the side walls will help more than you think. Good Luck to everyone!

  • Mine is outdoors this January, in the early evening. Our venue has space heaters, we are having a bonfire (and s'mores), and at IKEA I found some cute white fleece blankets for $3.50 each (I think they have them in blue, green, and black too). I got about a dozen of those. We're going to embroider our initials and date and a simple flower in one corner (can be done with a better than average sewing machine with a computer chip). Beyond that, I advised people of the average weather, and trust that someone in the party is an adult.
  • Well you let the guest know to dress accordingly, and if you have heaters there is nothing else you can do!
