Pet Pics and Adoption Stories

PP's thanks for sharing pics of your pets in the QOTD post. If you didn't read Vchans post, she thought it would be a good idea to have a separate post where we all share those pics and I agree that was a great idea! I would love to hear your adoption stories!

For those who have already shared, I think all of them are adorable! I have an affinity for cats, so I especially enjoyed those. Vchan..are your cats siblings? They look just alike.

Here is a few pics of our sweet baby girl. Her name is Graycie and she found me last May. I had the patio door open while watering the flowers out on the deck. All of a sudden a lil gray kitten came running into the house crying. She was being chased by a big ole tom cat and I shooed him away. I tried to calm her down and she jumped into my lap and started licking my face. You would have thought she was a dog if she wasn't obviously a cat! Graycie cuddled up with me for hours. That night she slept in the crook of my arm in bed with me. She stole my heart and has been ours since then.

Great topic Vchan and SS!

This is what I call our "herd."  The top two are JD and JR- brothers I got from my dad after his had kittens. They will be 6 on St. Patricks Day.

Claudia is the russian Blue mix- We found her abandoned under FI parents porch last fall. 5 weeks old and half starved, I had to give her 4hour feedings for a couple days before she put weight on. Now she rules the roost even though she will be half the size as the other three.

Nigel Wigglesworth is our newset addition this summer- he and his siblings were abandoned at our new place, and took up residence outside my door. I found homes for two of the kittens, but this guy is now part of the family.

    I am such a sucker :P

  • I got my baby 7 years ago from a rescue when my ex husband & I had another lab (male yellow). She quickly turned out to have an alpha personality and was my best friend and snuggle buddy when he and I fought going through the divorce. She took to my FI like white on rice.......she LOVES him! Her facial expressions are quite hysterical and we love her to pieces!

  • Woo - pet appreciation post - thanks for starting Sharp!

Love all the pet stories - turtles, you are brave for having so many kitties. If I had more than my two I think my house would be a wreck ;)

Sharps, my two actually aren't siblings. Story behind our adoption - we actually saw Maddy in a shelter but FI really wanted two cats together (he has a cat at home but she's a loner b/c she has never spent time with other cats before so he wanted two to grow up together). We ended up not getting her even though I was ready to take her home. Next day, FI comes home with Pip (from a friend of a friend) and so I insisted we go pick up Maddy. They've been with us for 10 months now :)

  • I lived in Morocco for two years and got my baby from a random farm there.  He is a little bit of a terror...survival of the fittest really makes a difference over there when the cats mostly just live on the streets.  He is not good with other people or animals.  I honestly don't know what we will do when we have kids cause I can't imagine him with babies.  Now that FI and I have been living together for over a year he has gotten used to FI and they get along much better now....he actualy lets FI touch him without biting.  But, aside from his faults, I love him to death!!

  • We have 2 cats who each have separate living spaces.  Blue (our orange tabby) was adopted by my FI 6 or 7 years ago, because a friend of his had him in a house with kids and dogs and the poor cat never came out.  So, my FI brought him home and worked with him to make him the cuddle monster that he is today.

Butterfinger (our calico princess) is my cat.  I adopted her from a friend's farm when she was only a few weeks old.  She is very dominant, and everything is hers.  She does not treat Blue well, so when we got our house, we gave them each a floor of the house and they seem to like it that way.  Blue lives downstairs, and my FI hangs out down there to play on his computer, and we usually watch TV down there, so he gets lots of cuddle time.  Butterfinger lives upstairs and spends a lot of time in my office with me.  And, she gets to sleep with us at night.  Between her and my FI, I have very little room in the bed....they are usually crowding me from both sides.

  • This is our dog Riley, we've had her just over a year now! She's a puggle :)

  • Awwww! So so cute! All of them! I love adoption stories of rescuing pets from bad situations or shelters. I understand why some people buy certain animals for their breed or for showing purposes, but I would never be able to choose that over saving a life from the shelter. Our Graycie was actually the cat belonging to our new neighbors. There is a large stray population in my neighborhood and I thought she was a part of that group, but I had never seen her before so I checked with the neighbors and sure enough she belonged to them! I was a little bit heartbroken because I really wanted to keep her. I told them how I found her and they said they recently made her an outdoor cat because they can't have cats in the house. The house next door has been vacant for years. The owner offered the house to my new neighbors to live in for a couple of months while their new house was being prepared for move in. Graycie used to be an inside cat and they said they hated to keep her outside because they were afraid for her safety. Once she had gotten a big scratch on her face and they think she had gotten in a fight with one of the strays. I think they saw my disappointment and knew she would have a better life with me so they offered her! They had kind of been looking for a new home for her, so it worked out well. They had never taken her to the vet and she wasn't spayed. I took her immediately and scheduled spay surgery. She was 7 months at the time and hadn't come into heat yet, thankfully. The last thing this neighborhood needs is more stray kittens! She is now an indoor cat and is safe and well loved. I'm sorry I can't remember your names, I'm on my phone and it won't let me scroll up without deleting my post so far. To those who have issues with cat behavior, including the one keeping them on separate floors, I suggest watching My Cat From Hell on animal planet. Jackson Galaxy is a cat behaviorist and can change any behavior. Most solutions are really easy, they just take time. He has never met a cat he wasn't able to help. Cats don't behave in a way to get back at people for anything, there is always a reason for their behavior. Unfriendly cats, ones that are territorial, biting, scratching, etc are all handled in his show. I highly recommend watching it.

First, let me suggest that this should be a sticky =) Here are our critters! My apologies, I'm posting from my phone so I can't put the actual pic on here.. I'm a veterinary technician so I'm always fostering something as well. We have 2 dogs and 3 cats, plus a foster kitten that my mom will be adopting next month. Maximus, 5 year old brindle English Mastiff, FI got from a breeder in Texas when he was stationed in fort hood --- http://i47.tinypic.com/14vrchs.jpg Maggie, 5 year old brindle Labrador retriever, Pit Bull Mix, FI got from the humane society in fort hood Texas. Her mother came in pregnant and had her puppies there. She looks chubby in this pic but I think it's a bad angle. --- http://i46.tinypic.com/2dkdauw.jpg Abigail, 5 year old charcoal Domestic Long Hair, I adopted her from the technician college I attended. They have animals at the school for hands-on training. They only stay for a year and are then adopted out. She was my first kitty. --- http://i48.tinypic.com/33p4pzn.jpg Marilyn, 6 year old black and white Manx, when I was working at a veterinary hospital in Pittsburgh as an emergency receptionist while in college, this cat was abandoned inbetween the double doors in the middle of the night when we were closed. No note as to why, and we couldn't find a medical reason why. However we do feel she was used as a breeder at some point but she came to us spayed. She is by far the coolest cat I've ever met. She thinks she's a dog and is the most social thing ever, she goes to work with me all the time and hangs out with us on a harness and I'm thinking about enrolling her into therapy training. She's kind of fat, she came that way and it's super hard to get weight off of a cat. --- http://i50.tinypic.com/abgi02.jpg Bond, 1 1/2 year old black and white (tuxedo) Domestic Short Hair, was my first foster kitten (I had fostered pups before, but not kittens) and my first "foster-fail" (when you keep a foster). FI became very attached to him as he used to follow him around. So I said we could keep him. He was a little bastard for a while but after some strenuous training, he's doing well. And he no longer follows FI around, he likes me more =) --- http://i45.tinypic.com/25upd6x.jpg And- just for fun, my current foster, Thumper, 6 month old black and white Domestic Long Hair, Thumper came to me as one of 4 three week old kittens that were found under a lady's deck. The lady, who has 5 children and her own pets, attempted to bottle feed them for about a week before bringing them in for me to foster. unfortunately I don't know if she was feeding them enough or often enough. when the 4 came in, there was 1 very sickly one who may have aspirated some milk and possibly had pneumonia. unfortunately that one passed away before I got him home. then there were 3, 2 were orange tabbies and 1 black and white. they all seemed fine but the black and white 1 seemed to eat the best. the following morning I went to check on them and the black one was cold and barely alive. I quickly rushed him into work not even out of my pj's or my hair done. the one vet that looked him over and thought it would be best if I put him down as she didn't think he'd make it much longer, I was not surprised that she said that seeing as though I've seen many kittens come in like that and not survive he really did look absolutely terrible. however I said to him "do you want to go to heaven?" and he squirmed a little bit for the first time prior to that he was completely limp. I made the decision to not put him down but to do some supportive care like warm subcutaneous fluids, oral dextrose solution (like sugar water) and constantly giving a little milk by mouth every couple of minutes. I did however take home some euthanasia solution in case I felt it was necessary. within an hour he was up and walking around and doing great. the following day his other brother was acting the same way and I wasn't able to save him. then I was left with Thumper and his sister. I still do not know why the others didn't make it however they were all thin when they came in, we tested them for feline leukemia and AIDS and they were negative. I feel they weren't fed appropriately prior to my care. I had named them Atlas and Athena. Athena went to her new home about 2 months ago and is doing great and they call her kitty. Atlas stole my moms heart, and she named him Thumper as he has huge feet because I think he is going to be big and it's her favorite Disney character. --- http://i45.tinypic.com/fdvl7a.jpg so sorry for the long post but I'm really grateful that I made the decision that I did on Thumper
